Uumm, barely wider than those bolts. The truck is on the ground and I can't get under it...a snail can't get under it right now. 3/8ths"??

My Oak fence boards are 1x6 inch, on the trailer, rough cut. Thickness didn’t matter, I ran them through a planer to match. I started with a 6 inch board on each out side and worked my way in, then cut a board to fit in the middle. The edges were not overly straight, some touching, some with gaps. If touching I had to run a drill bit through the wood to get the carriage bolt in. It’s 3-4 years old, stored outside, often with mulch or dirt on it. Some of the Spar Varnish has worn thin, but none of the boards have moved. No gaps between the stringers.

My very first vehicle was a 55 IH R120, 8’ flatbed. Drove it through high school and college. Put 4X4 out of a 63 IH under it. Let it go when I bought the 39 Ford in my avatar.

Thanks for the info. Yeah, I've wondered about the different plank widths and thought why not make them all the same. I get it on a regular pickup as your width limited, but a flatbed isn't. The perimeter rail is overlapped about 2" length & 12" width, so they though about a future owner wanting to enlarge the bed (probably not 74 years later, because we should be using spaceships by now)

  7. When I was a young fella and learning how to estimate jobs at the family boatyard, my father told me to calculate it out as honestly as I could and then double it. Turned out to be pretty accurate.
Billy Bandit... damn fine job you did there.
