Seems like a lot of different ideas on the internet. Asking if any one has done a swap from the granny 4speed to a t5. I have a 283 mild build, 3.73 rear gears , long bed 2 piece drive shaft. Mechanical speedo. Looks like I need to stay with a S10 83-88 for mechanical. im trying to figure out what I can use off current truck and what all I will need for the swap. I have a 1963 Chevy c10 thank you me
You will need a clutch disc of the correct diameter, that has splines that match the T5. You will either need a spacer to go between the transmission and bellhousing, or to do some surgery on the input shaft. The mounting bolt holes will need to be enlarged. Depending on what year your truck is, you may need a spacer ring for the center bore of the bellhousing.

Your 283 should have a 168-tooth flywheel. This is a good one to replace the entire clutch assembly with fresh stuff, and to have the flywheel machined. If your truck is of the vintage that has side -mounts on the bellhousing, you must add a transmission crossmember under the tail of the T5. If you don't, you will break the case in short order. I am having an old-man moment on when those mounts stopped.

If you haven't purchased a transmission yet, be aware that, generally speaking, the 4 cylinder S10s used a T5 with a 14 percent overdrive, while the V6 models had a 28 percent overdrive.
You should be safe with the 63 Bellhousing, The bigger bore for the bearing support came in 68 with the SM-465. The SM 420 has the same bearing collar od as car transmissions. The used to be 80.00 dollar swap of a Jeep T 5 ten spline input shaft solves the clutch disk issue. I think I got the last Astro Van clutch disk that fits my flathead that Rock auto sold to use with my S-10 T-5 This lets you use the oem Chevy clutch disk. https://lugnutz65chevystepside.weeb...ft-swap---diy-and-skip-the-adapter-plate.html
Kinda. The T4 does not have the bump in the tail housing for 5th gear. This is a T4: Note the shape below the shifter box and ahead of the transmission mount. This is a T5: Note the difference in that same spot. The bulge is for 5th gear.
Ultimately the metal tag or sticker tells the tale. GM was super sloppy when supplies got low, and when doing replacements under warranty. I've seen every mismatch possible.
...IF either one is still present/legible after 30+ years. Here in the Rust Belt, odds of either being legible if present are not great in my experience. This might help: https://lugnutz65chevystepside.weeb...---installation-from-engine-to-rear-axle.html
Yeah, a lot of the metal tags I see around this part of the world are so obliterated that you'd have to call in the F.B.I. to try to acid etch the numbers like a handgun with the serial number ground off to read it.
