The only negative about using the 6v stock starter on 12v is that occasionally the spring breaks on the Bendix. Not often, and the starter does just fine. They run years like this.
If your starter bolts are too long, would you hear a rubbing or clicking noise when depressing the clutch? I had no noise issues at all before changing out the starter and I don’t believe the bendix is not disengaging because in neutral there isn’t any noise at all. What do ya think boys?
Neither - if the starter is too close you can rotate it away from your exhaust manifolds and drill new holes, not all the way around but several degr each way.
On my 8BA I have stock 6V armature in a '63 390 Thunderbird case. That gets you the correct guts with a 12V wound stator. I have never broken a spring.
Problem isn’t clearances, problem is when I depress the clutch it makes a rubbing noise, when not depressed, no rubbing noise
After having a rebuild company take my good Bendix and replace it with Chinesium (that also failed) I installed a high torque starter like I have on several other cars. I won't buy the Powermaster brand, but there are plenty of good ones out there. Not only has it been flawless for 5 years, but during that time I used the starter to move the non-running truck around my pole shed. If you get a good one, they're indestructible!
See if the end play on the crankshaft is excessive, and the crank and flywheel are moving forward and rubbing on something when the clutch is used. Could be part of the starter, end of a bolt, anything the flywheel is close to. If you think a bolt may be too long, maybe put a washer on it and see.
Keeping in mind, up until I installed this gear reduction starter I wasn’t having any noise or rubbing sound at all with that POS power master starter. I’m gonna get underneath it again and rotate the starter around (right now it’s in the upside down position) to see if that’s what it might be. If not I’ll be kickin out another 2-300 bucks for a Van Pelt starter. Thanks again fellas for your insight
Hey, Merc Man You will get nowhere "bitching out" anybody. Ask for a Speedway tech. Three smoked starters say YOU are doing something wrong . 6 or 12 volt ? Where is the battery located ? Trunk. ? Do you have a dedicated 1/0 ground cable direct from battery to bell housing bolt ? Are all connections clean and tight ? Do you have the correct ground ? Jim, bangin' on old cars since 1957. Many times the engine is not grounded so the starter is fishing for a ground, do ground from engine to frame and engine to firewall and starter to engine. 4 ground wires.
