    Hello,

Following my wife’s advice in so many gentle words is an act of selective listening. All of these years, an attentive notion made things run smoothly in our relationships. No one could point out the fact that I was not listening on our daily lives or on our long road trips then and now.

The latest inspiration was to clean up several boxes of old 16mm film reels and copies of notes. She said as long as they are digitized, we could throw those original films away and create space in the shelves of the office closet. WHAT??? throw away something of historic value, just to create space for more modern “stuff?”

So, I nodded and said I would clean out the other photo box and try and get some breathing room all in one container. That took care of the anxious moment and odd looks I was getting sent over to me. So, for the next few hours, I took several boxes out and started slimming down the contents. Sure, there were things in the boxes that should not have been in there, so out they went. The pile was getting bigger and double checking again, I said goodbye and they started to fill up our outside trash cans.

But, one good thing popped up that surprised me. Extra photos of the cool yellow 1934 Ford Phaeton from Santa Barbara, that I had followed for months to get several feature photos and stories for some magazine publications. I thought I had cleaned out most of the color slides from those old days from the numerous Kodak Carousel Containers. These were in a double compartment, yellow, Kodak slide out boxes for slides.

These color slides were not Kodak Ektachrome. They were 35mm color film sent to me from a studio in Los Angeles. They were the unprocessed 35mm color film strips from the movie industry. The color was good, but not quite the quality of Kodak. It was half as expensive, but it was difficult to distinguish between the two, there was a slight color offset.

I knew which was which, since the Kodak had factory Ektachrome slide mounts and I made color slides from custom frames available to the industry for the Hollywood color film. The slides must have been extras as I gave away most of them to the owner and kept a few. The defunct magazines have their copies somewhere or in the local dump. The homemade color slides were a great surprise for me.

The back of the El Camino shots were a big hit, regardless of being 35mm or 2.25 x 2.25 color slides.

But, for some reason, the 35mm slides seem to be the best shots, other than what the magazine used for their color insert story. The larger color slides were used sparingly as the development costs were almost twice as much. The overall clear image of the larger negative was much better, but the camera was also larger and a little “unwieldy.”
