Gene and I had talked about him racing my #7 at a Vintage event, but we never could work out the timing. Besides the Drag Racing he did early on, he also raced Hardtops on dirt and asphalt, as did Blackie Gejeian.

 

Well Happy Birthday Gene. This was 13 years ago at a metal working cl*** he put on at Post Falls Idaho. Great cl*** where I use things I learned that weekend all the time.

I first met Gene in 1998 at Pleasanton when I was walking along a pathway a the Goodguys show and he had a booth set up out in the middle of and area about 100 ft or so from where Tex Smith and Tom Medley had their booth. I got to visit with him and only had the extra cash to buy a pair of Chevy Bowtie earrings for my wife from him that she still has.

 

Ahh yes, the talented Mr. Winfield. He always worked hard, but at his own pace, when building customs. I think it should be noted that even though he’s not building he still has a great deal of knowledge to share. Happy birthday to you sir.

Slinging a little lead with Gene.

 

Saw him last week at the LARS going strong. Amazing man. We should all be so lucky to reach that age and still be enjoying life.

 

Gene is an inspiration for the rest of us. Happy birthday Gene.

 

The first time I met Gene was at the Pate Swap Meet in the early 2000's. He spent 5 minutes talking me down to $3.00 on a hubcap I had marked $5.00. Later in the day, I went to his space and offered him $25.00 on a bumper splash shield he had marked $35.00. His comment was "If I wanted $25.00 for it, I would have marked it as such. I'll take $35.00, no less." I paid $35.00, got his autograph, and walked away laughing. The part is still hanging on the wall in my shop waiting for a yet to be finished project. I've seen him a couple of more times since and he is a helluva nice guy. Happy Birthday Gene!!

What the hell happened to Gene? Have y’all heard the story about her beating the hell out of him??? she’s been arrested. He’s in the hospital right now. Maybe that’s on another thread?
