    Hello,

We have all heard stories about “Earl Schieb.” “I will paint any car for $19.99…” or so as the years moved on in our lives.
    upload_2024-6-23_2-32-37.png
There was one near our high school in Long Beach during this time period. It was a popular place.

“Hi, my name is Earl Scheib and I will paint any car for $29.95.” Times and costs changed, but for the low buck teenager during the 1958 to 65 era. It was a reasonable option to get a new paint job on an old car or change the look of a “used” car for some individual choices that would not break the bank accounts.

There were two specific Chevy sedans that got the Earl Schieb Paint Jobs during our hot rod/cruising days. One was a two tone 53 Chevy hardtop sedan that transformed overnight from a staid “family sedan” to a cool looking hot rod, custom car. The odd green paint job looked pretty good. And the Chevy sedan stood out among all of the other bland colors from the factory choices on used cars.

The next obvious thing was the 1953 Chevy was the first to cross South of the Border for White Tuck and Roll upholstery. Yes, we drove late at night to cross.

The paint and upholstery held up well, even in the salty air locations that we took the sedan with a couple of high school surfers or a stack of surfboards for our friends.

The next car was the 1956 Chevy 2 door post, who also got the White Tuck and Roll everywhere, including the inside roof and package tray. They both looked pretty good for work on the custom cars not done in the USA. That color was a bright Silver.

Yes, the 56 Chevy two door post sedan was painted a silver color that looked fantastic. So, there was no one willing to say anything against an Earl Schieb paint job. Silver was one of those colors that almost hides any marks, blems, or actually give a deep shine like a stock black paint job. The application was pretty good for the cost to a teenager.

With chrome rims and a nice lowered rake, the 56 silver Chevy looked great. Now add in the all white South of the Border tuck and roll and the eyes made the Chevy sedan look as if it was painted and customized by the famous Long Beach paint/upholstery shops or the ones north of Bixby Knolls in Compton… YRMV

    Note:
When a red 1940 Ford two door sedan was parked in the drive-in restaurant lot along side the above two cars, it was some good looking cars, under the parking lot lights. The Red 40 sedan had a custom white Tuck and Roll upholstery from a local USA shop, down the Bixby Knolls street. The Red paint job was also done near the location of our teenage hangouts in So Cal.

All three were nice looking cars with work done on various budgets and styles. But, they were the most exterior changed hot rod sedans from our teenage group.

The ‘Topper’ Buick was made for a 1937 Cary Grant movie. The pictures above show the car in its postwar guise, when it was stretched to fit a Chrysler chassis. It looked a lot better in its original form:

And it looks like she is chewing the guy out while she is climbing into (or out of) her source of fame. It was the impression she made for almost anyone that actually saw her in real life at a drag strip. She carried the image of being an unhappy woman through most of her driving career. The difference between the personalities of her and Miss Linda (and most other ladies connected with drag racing at the time) were astounding.
I saw her on two different occasions, both with the same impression. Never looked for her again.
