I saw one at the Pe*** Jean swapmeet yesterday. It was similar to Jim Sibleys pictures above. Everything in front of the firewall was exposed. Big headers. 20 or 22 rims. It was a recent model Suburban!!
If that is the Studebaker that I think it might be the fit and finish are far above and beyond rat rod. I remember the uproar in 1975 when my buddy JD Fikes welded a cut down rear quarter and turtle deck to the back of his 27 T body shell as a turtle deck and drove to Street rod nationals in Memphis. He had cut the frame out from under a 55 4 door for some guy to use under his dirt track modified and when we were looking at what was left of the hulk the "what if" light came on.
There was a crosley that had the wheels running on the outside of the car. Back in the 70's, iirc. Think the guys name was Dave ??? Orange, hinged in rear & flip-up body. Later added modelA fenders n running boards, painted black, which made it look even better & nicely proportioned. Think it was in R&C, & HRMx, maybe others. Also a yellow chopped airflow named "HairFlow" in the 70's did the same thing, although that one may've just had the fenders n 'boards removed. Effect was the same. Featured in R&C. Marcus...
nrgwizard, I remember both of those cars. Pretty slick cars back in the day, and would still be pretty slick today. Didn't the Airflow end up red? Or was it red, and ended up yellow?
There's a first gen Camaro that shows up at Pete & Jakes open house sometimes. It's really not to bad. I think an early 60's Nova or early Falcon would look cool. Most miss it by a mile on the front end though.
On that thread I used the words "a distinct sub-type" to describe what @sgtlethargic is looking for. https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/unusual-roadsters.1199025/#post-13657138
True, but since I haven't been able to post pics, that is an "issue", & while I can remember the cars, I don't have the slightest idea of where the feature articles might possibly be, stored in many boxes, hither & yon. ;( . Sorry. Maybe someone else can post 'em. Marcus...
Thanks. That's the Crosley. IIRC, for a short while it was run fenderless, but looked rather poor & was hard on the eyes in fenderless form. As I remember - that thing seriously wowed the troops. & the Ardun didn't hurt. I think he knew Tex Smith well, & it was reported that he ran the wheels off that, iirc. Only saw a little coverage of HairFlow - it too, wowed the troops for a little bit. Then disappeared. Chop was a bit tight(to me). Marcus... Also, sorta/kinda, was Sebastian(SP?) Rubios' 35/36 ford roadster, that covered 100k's of miles. IIRC, it had a 37/38 ford truck grill(narrowed?), no front fenders except tight small cycle fenders, & bobbed stockers w/skirts in the rear. Had a different EastCoast look, but I liked it. Not quite sure it'd fit the requested theme here, but it'd cause a dbl-take when you saw it. .
Here's the Airflow, and a thread on the HAMB, https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...ing-bones-am-i-remembering-correctly.1288436/
When I was kid at the local oval track...some of the guys were building modifieds from all kinds of things....this is the late great Lou Lazzaro in a Mopar from the mid 1960s era... I think something like this would look so cool on the street again...
I remember looking forward to a thread on a hiboy '59 El Camino a HAMBER was building, was it Doc Frankenstein?
