    Mart's 57 T-Bird Pt 10! Heater fixed after 20 years! Plus a Minor Accident! (Mart's Update 2424)

Back in the mists of time the heater core in the T-Bird sprung a leak. I disconnected the hoses and carried on, as you do. I did pick up a heater core that I thought might fit. In this video, continuing with the theme of fixing long overdue issues I get the prospective replacement in place and working after a couple of glitches. I had a near miss when the car selected reverse unexpectedly. No harm though, so all good. Another little job out of the way.

    This week's offering:

57 T-Bird Pt 11! New door check strap and latch adjust + small Jobs a plenty! (Mart's Update 2425)

Time to address some more small items on the T-Bird. I replace a missing check strap. I adjust the push button on the driver's door handle to get it opening correctly. I put a clevis pin in the door, fit a new fan belt and put an on off valve in the heater hose. All little jobs but each one represents a step in the right direction. Bit by bit the car is getting better.
I Hope you enjoy this offering. Don't forget: Keep it real! Keep it cheap!

I'll have to find your channel again. My wife and I enjoy your videos on Youtube and watch it and various shows rather than the junk on regular TV most of the time.

Something a bit different this time:

    A day out in the countryside! T-Bird +Caterpillar D2 Donkey start! (Mart's Update 2426)

My friend Mark holds a get together at his place in aid of charity. I rode down there with Geoff in the T-Bird. I persuaded Mark to start up the little Cat crawler he had there. A fun afternoon with good people and a great place to be. Thanks for the invite, Mark, and thanks for the book too!

    Here's tonight's nonsense:
Mart's 1955 100E. Tidying Loose Ends plus Classic cars at Gaydon! (April) (Mart's Update 2427)
It was time for the first Gaydon Gathering for 2024. The 100E was the weapon of choice. As it was it's first long-ish run I wanted to change and set the gearbox oil and top up the steering box. I also tackled a slight weep at the fuel tank sender. I used a novel method for the gearbox which went well. I was also able to jack the car up by my rebuilt sill which was good. Had a good run down to Gaydon and checked out the classic cars that had braved the changeable weather.

    Mart's 33 gets a bit of love.

Mart's 1933 5 Window Coupe: Sitting nearly 3 years. Will it run? (Mart's Update 2428)

Hello! Welcome to Mart's Garage. Many will have noticed my 1933 5W coupe in the background. It has been parked nearly 3 years. I decided I would try and run it this year. So join me as I dig it out and see if it will run. The engine is the crusty flatty. The one I featured in a video series a few years ago. Check it out if you want to see an engine that in reality should have been scrapped.

    Tonight's little bit of nonsense:

Mart's 1933 Coupe: It runs! Will it drive? Will it STOP? +100E and Classic Cars! (Update 2429)

Many will have noticed my 1933 5W coupe in the background of my videos. In the previous video I got the engine running without too much trouble. In this video I wanted to take it for a run and get some fresh fuel. Well, I didn't make it that far. Join me as I dig into it and try and see what's wrong.
As a special bonus I took a trip out in the 100E to a local breakfast meet. Some interesting cars there so check it out!

Tonight's bit of low commitment escapism.

Mart's 1933 Coupe: New Master Cylinder goes on! But more brake work required! (Update 2430)

Many will have noticed my 1933 5W coupe in the background of my videos. In previous videos I got the engine running without too much trouble, and tried to drive it but could tell there was a problem with the brakes. In this video I fit a new master cylinder and go through the rest of the brakes to see if everything else was ok. Guess what? It wasn't!

  10. I've always cleaned and honed old cylinders rather than take a chance on new or rebuilt cylinders. If those new ones are mis-drilled, couldn't you insert and peen a brass rod, then re-drill ? Honing original cylinders would be my first choice, though.

Mart's 1933 Coupe: Let's finish the brakes and go for a ride! (Update 2431)

In previous videos I got the engine running without too much trouble, and tried to drive it but could tell there was a problem with the brakes. In this video I finish the repairs to the brakes and finally get out on the road for a drive.

@Mart , explain the grease in the wheel cylinders please. Didn't think one would want petroleum products in the brake fluid. I always lube them up inside with brake fluid.

It's a special grease that is compatible with brake cylinder rubbers. Using brake fluid is good too.

Time for a breather and just some little jobs.

Just some little jobs this time around. I decided to make some new Early Ford type axle keys. I needed one for the 33 coupe and can use others on my other vehicles. It wasn't difficult and could be dome by anyone at home with basic tools.
The garage roof was annoying me with debris blowing in and getting on top of the cars. I did a round of little jobs just to tidy up the area and take care of some building maintenance.
Back to a little more car related nonsense next time.

    Tonights bit of light entertainment.

Geoff's bracket needed straightening. We get it sorted.
I paint the bootlid on the 100E. Green be Gone!
Geoff popped by on his lightweight Panther, just recently put on the road after restoration.

Thanks for dropping by Mart's Garage!

Mart's 57 T-Bird: Can I modify it so it starts in Park? Neutral safety switch upgrade! (Update 2434)

One of the quirks of these older Automatics was only being able to start in Neutral. This was a contributing factor to a little mishap I had when I accidentally selected reverse while working on the car. Luckily no damage was done. When I showed this, a comment from a viewer prompted me to do some research. I found a description of some mods done to the switch to allow the car to be started in Park as well as Neutral, which is more the norm in later vehicles. So follow along as I modify my switch using the forum post as a guide.

Mart - Your neutral safety switch mod turned out completely different than I was expecting. For years I ran my ‘55 Mercury ( with Mercomatic) without the neutral safety switch since the plastic had shattered. I felt I could remember to always start the car in neutral - until I didn’t! It was in park when I started it and everything was OK. But, when I shifted into reverse, there was a hideous thump/bang. I was sure I had just destroyed my transmission! :(

From what I understand, the Fordo/Mercomatics where not designed to be started in park. Their parking pawls are supposedly weaker than those in the Cruisomatics (which can be started in park or neutral). It was suggested, if the car was on a slight grade, the parking pawl would have a load on it and would require extra effort (which I remember happening in my situation) to pop it lose. And make a big bang! :0

I replaced the switch with a NOS one and now it’s neutral start only for me! :)

Twin carbs on a flatty. Just how difficult can a fella make it?

Mart's 1933 Coupe: Hot Rod Dual Carbs for Pendine! Part1. (Update 2435)

I have decided to run my 33 coupe at this year's VHRA Hot Rod Races at Pendine. I have ran it before in it's current configuration, so I wanted to see what a difference a dual carb setup would make. The rest of the engine is unchanged and pretty well stock. The manifold does not fit as is so follow along while I make a series of modifications. Lots of lathe and milling machine work involved in this job. Hopefully once completed we will see an improvement on the beach!

More machining madness on the not quite a bolt on twin carb conversion!

Mart's 1933 Coupe Pt6: Hot Rod Dual Carbs for Pendine! Part2. (Update 2436)

In the last video I evolved a plan and started the machining. In this one I continue along the same path and get the carbs bolted on using custom studs. I then turn my attention to the next conundrum which is how to mount the generator. Lots of lathe and milling machine work involved in this job. Hopefully once completed we will see an improvement on the beach!

Guess what? I did some filming at Pendine!

Pendine 2024. Mart's 1933 Coupe at the VHRA Hot Rod Races! Part 1! (Update 2438)

Hello! Welcome to Mart's Garage. I have decided to run my 33 coupe at this year's VHRA Hot Rod Races at Pendine. I have ran it before in it's current configuration, so I wanted to see what a difference a dual carb setup would make.
So Join me and Geoff, Rusty and Trev on the trip down to Pendine, South West Wales. This Video covers the drive down and the first part of Saturday. I show most of the cars and my first run down the beach. I do see an improvement over my previous outing so the twin carbs appear to be doing the trick! Make sure you look out for part 2!
