I always hear stories about deep pockets spending major cash to build a car. But this auction on ebay actually has a tally sheet w/ costs of construction going on that shows buying the car for $40k and putting $325k more into it. Im sure the shop that did this didnt have a hard time making profit. Sure it's a 32, but wow...:

    - During most of the build, $15,000 per month was paid for "labor"
    - $15,000 was spent on a 450hp tuned port efi SBC
    - $5,000 was spent on the Termec 5spd trans
    - etc....

Guess seeing the money flow over time was a big impact on my eyes!

damn think of all the money the builder made off of that haha

  3. Would you trust a shop that did all there work on a blank sheet of paper that rough?? If I was spending that sort of $$ I would want some professional computer generated spread sheet! But then it would have been an additional $15,000!
There is another post about this car, it and a cheaper 3w!

    That's insanity!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Why the hell would anybody spend this kind of money on a Street Rod???????????
Man, for that kind of money I'm sure that Chip would have reconfigured that whole design & Marcel & Sons would have formed it in metal from scratch! $336,K that is simply astonishing!!!!!!!!

Robt Williams has a saying "Can you hear that?" "No what's that?" "It's the price of another 32 part/car going up!"
I find that saying very funny as well as true for the time being-lol!

I'm sure the owner loves it when he takes it to the local shows and 99% of the people p*** it up without even a glance.

  7. So, who is this guy, and is he in the market for another car??

I mean, build a couple cars for him and you could retire young, who cares why he spent the cash on it... some folks can afford to blow it and don't care.

could be one of those guys who makes that much money in a week...if you've got billions, a measly half mil' would be like spending 100 bucks...

Streetrods and pro baseball teams--allee samee??
The more you pay for the pieces/players, the more coverage...including here on the HAMB!

OR...look at it as a traditional build, just like 1952 adjusted for inflation...buy the cheapest deuce with a solid body at the used car lot, have the local welder help with the ch***is work for a few hours, take your new parts counter motor to the speed shop for a few tweaks...hey, this sounds just like Dean Batchelor's buildup he chronicled in his book! Tell me what's different here??? :)

Money is nothing to some folks. This guy lives in my town ... and has over 500 thousand in this roadster. It won " America's Most Beautiful Roadster " . He has a 32 5W done almost the same way ( only 350 thousand or so ) ...

http://www.donshotrods.com/shoptour.html is a link to the cars ...

This guy also has a well funded ( by him ) Pro/Mod drag car ...

I'm thinking he said **** it and charged whatever he wanted because if the owner pays it, that's major income for the shop, and if he doesn't then he puts a mechanic's lean on the car and now it's his. It's a win-win situation for the shop!

I have a friend that spends way more than the guy in the Ebay auction with a very well known west coast rod builder every year. He currently owns the the Tom Mc Mullen '32 roadster, the Jack Calori '36 Ford 3 window, and other historical street rods. He has had his cars at Pebble Beach and other high profile shows all over the world. He will take them to local shows and laugh as the people nit pick them, and ask him if they are real. He will usually just tell them that they are kit cars!!!!

that car does nothing for me.

  24. Why do people get so freaked out about what someone else is spending to build their car? Or what someone will pay for?

My non-car friends think I'm an idiot for spending $2500 for a rusty old shoebox. I think they're idiots for spending $7000 to recover their sofa. Who really cares?

Did anyone notice how all the prices on the work sheet are big round numbers? Engine $15000, ******-$5000. I wonder how much money the builder skimmed of by doing this. I'd want everything broken down a bit more. It doesn't even list the hours worked each month. Most wealthy people I know like to know where their money is going, even when they are blowing lots of it....

As I remember from things I have read, that's the way Miller priced his racecars and engines in the 1920's...high end marketing, high end in Miller's case because you had to buy his stuff to win.

"January 2004 was a $30,000 labor month." At what point would it become sensible to just hire your own builder to follow you around and translate your whims into metal??

I doubt very much that the owners $350,000 grin is bigger than my $6k grin when I'm done. Some guys have more dollars than sense, but I do like standing in line for all the cast off parts - when the chrome wasn't "show chrome".

Or...maybe same thing...simply competetive spending; Streetrods are just the vehicle here. If someone introduced him to collecting Beany Babies on Ebay, he'd spend just as much to attain supremacy.
