If only we had that problem now! Now they kill each other in the streets. 50s and 60s were the good days!

Not stupid, just cynical and devious.
Buy property next to a "nuisance" for a cheaper price, complain loudly until the "nuisance" i.e. farm, race track etc. gets shut down. Presto! now have a more valuable, quiet property worth a whole bunch more money.

    Hello,

Having driven in a 60 Corvair of my next door neighbor for a spell and then driving the 62 Corvair of my wife’s in college and after we were married. That photo is a funny one. It is like taking a knife to a gun fight and expecting some good results. Ha!

The slow slushy power transferred to the tires was the key. As much as the design was great, very similar to a Porsche, it just missed on all accounts. It was a story and facts that made it an “almost” story. Almost like a Porsche in design should have had quality, along with results. But, it was made for the lowest cost, for the less expensive market of all cars sold. Cute, yes, but speed was a dream, never realized on the streets.

It not only did accelerate but at almost freeway speeds it just felt as if it was going to turn or sway into the next lane. Hot rod/VW race shops had all sorts of speed goodies, but a little more was not enough to over come a truly bland car.

Yes, it was my wife’s first car she bought with her own money. It got her to school daily and to her telephone, long distance operator’s job to earn enough to buy clothes for her and gas for the Corvair coupe. For her, as long as it got her to school and afterschool job, it was a good thing.

When we were dating and after we got married, she was almost the primary driver of a nice 327 powered 65 El Camino all over So Cal and on our long vacation-photo shoot excursions. Now, that Corvair took a back seat and was left outside of the garage to fight the nightly salt air incursions.

When it rained, she drove the El Camino, I was stuck with taking chances going through the deep puddles to keep dry. Who would have thought that I would have to use rubber tennis shoes without socks while driving in the rain and deep puddles… that is another story.

This is probably me coming home from downtown Los Angeles after spending days getting fixed and properly tuned. My wife had gotten stuck in heavy traffic in the fast lane of the freeway, in front of the General Hospital in East Los Angeles. We had it towed to a friend’s repair shop in downtown.

As much work as we did to keep it running, it was transportation at its simple level and worked for a lot of people. We saw the light and gave it away to her uncle because, something is better than nothing for him, while we were happy to have someone take it away.

    Note:

If the Corvair had been one of those 180 hp turbocharged newer models with upgraded suspension, perhaps it would have followed us along in our adventures. But as it was, it was a time to move on and find something different, but better. Along came a 327 powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery project that turned into our most reliable running/handling hot rod until we sold it to another young couple.

There was a Guaranty Chevrolet in Orange County and couple of hours up the coast, but also in San Diego for those interested in Chevrolet dealers.
