    Hey Guys,

Looking to switch out my stock rear leafs from my 54 Chevy with a kit that Walton Fabrications sells...

Anyone in here use that kit?
If so, what are some recomendations or things to expect from it? One more thing, whats the BEST way to remove the old rivits that are supporting the stock leafs?

    Thanks,

    Jefe

I have the kit. It is pretty straight forward. I ground off the rivets and drilled them out. Not hard just took some time.

Also you might want to go back and do and intro so your time on the HAMB is easier.

  3. I took a grinding wheel to mine...took off the heads of the rivets on the bottom of the frame rail and still had to grind off part of the base of the spring mounts so that I could get a pry bar between the base of the mounts and the frame to pop 'em off. A friend of mine suggested taking a torch to 'em because the rivets are softer and will drop out once heated, but I haven't actually done it.

Mine was really easy just took a lot of time to grind out the rivets.Just used a normal angle grinder. Might want to check how low you want it at the same time, the 2 inch blocks they give you are still a little too high. The stuff I got from them was good quality.

    Me too.

FWIW I used the Chassis Engineering kit in my car. It went in awesome, and did more to improve the ride/handling of my car than the MII front end! I will say that the CE kit mounts the springs directly under the frame rails, and they are wider than the stock springs, so it limits the amount of space you have to run your exhaust in-between the spring and the gast tank or spare tire well.

No experience with the Walton kit, tho.

What rear end fits the best ?

  8. Oh yeah, me too. Forgot that in my first post....had to use the pry bar when some of the really stubborn rivets wouldn't budge. As long as you get one or two out with the punch, you'll be able to get under the base of the mount.

Another vendor to consider is Posies...I know a couple people who've been extremely happy with their Super Slider springs. The nice thing about these is that they use the stock spring mounts, so you don't have to worry about all that rivet BS.

I used a 68 Camaro before I heard that a 57 chevy rear end would work better.

How much does the Walton setup cost?

I checked Posies but they don't show anything for 54 chevy

  13. Nope, that's the cool part...they taper where they mount, but otherwise they're the same width as the other aftermarket springs (2.5"?). We just put a set on a '50 Fleetline with 3" blocks...slammed the crap out of it.

I suggest using the Mopar universal spring perches available from Summit for $12 too.

  14. I'd call 'em up...their website doesn't show half what they stock. They've even offerred to fab up some stuff for me they didn't carry. You might want to see if one of the Alliance Vendors is a distributor too...discounts are nice!

and fast service too. I had a local shop fab up some for me. that was May. I'm still waiting. Posies had em on my porch in 3 days.
Moral: Don't use General Spring in Olathe, KS. Worst fuckin service ever. 7 months.

I like my Walton's kit. It fit as advertised. Nice stuff. BTW, it helps if you drill all the rivets a little smaller than the shank size then grind em.

  21. I went with the CE kit. $500.00 DELIVERED to my door from Hot rod and custom supply. Talk to Todd he is a great guy to do business with. It includes the springs, mounts shockes ect. Complete set up.

When I removed my spring/frame mounts I cut off the tops of the rivits with a cutoff wheel and drilled about 1/4 inch or so down with a 3/16 drill bit and drove them out with a punch. By drilling the hole it allowed the rivit to colapse as it was driven out.
