Please move this if it's in the wrong area... Does anyone know a company, or fellow hamber that can ship a crated engine from Richmond VA to broken arrow OK..? I'm having a rough start... fastenall doesn't want to take it because it's value is too high, UPS freights people said they only deal with businesses, Uships carriers have bad reviews online as in, messing with delivery times and damaging things... Any suggestions?
I have had good luck with Central Transport and Old Dominion Freight. Both are going to be pricey using residential lift gate service. Most of the haulers here on the HAMB are booked this time of year.
Hello, Moving van companies move just about anything. When our relatives moved to Missouri one year, they had two cars. They drove one with the whole family and the other car got packed inside of a moving van with the rest of their "things." The specialized shipping companies may not be the only game in town… simple ordinary established moving van companies might be available. A long time ago, before specialized shipping companies started, the old moving van companies moved everything. When we were selling our 671 supercharged 292 SBC motor complete, it was drained dry. We crated it up per instructions given to us from the moving van company. It was tight and secure for transport to the Midwest. The buyer who flew out to the Westcoast to buy our advertised motor. The moving van came to our house and checked out our crate and secure fittings. They wheeled it into the large semi moving van and off they went to some place in the Midwest. 10 years later, Atts Ono's immaculate 40 Willys Coupe complete with motor was loaded into a moving van for another shipment to the Midwest. Jnaki It may not be the most economical, but call them to check out their information. There are always folks moving across the USA or just in some region. YRMV
Why are you sending an engine from Virginia to Oklahoma ? If you are having work done there are places closer to you than Oklahoma. If you are selling it - it is the Buyer’s responsibility to facilitate transport. Uship - brokers - moving companies and commercial drop shipping all are a roll of the dice. I transport engines along routes anchored by vehicle transport so the engines I transport usually accompany a vehicle I am transporting and I include the engine hauling for free with the vehicle transport. I have built trips around high dollar engine transport - but the price is cost prohibitive for the average customer. Someone is going to have to make a long trip …. Jim
Keep in mind that commercial carrier freight rates are determined by classification and freight density. You need to talk to a freight broker about your shipment and a freight quotation. Patience and time will typically work in your favor when finding a suitable carrier for your transport. An engine strapped to a pallet is likely going to be more expensive to ship (and prone to damage) than one in a wooden or engine shipping crate. A shipping crate can have other items stacked on top of it as it is loaded into a trailer...a palletized engine, not so....so you are charged for all the trailer above the engine and the footprint is larger than the engine in a crate....unless it is a big diesel truck engine...I've shipped those too. Consider removing accessories. It is a used engine or salvage for classification. Also a terminal to terminal shipment is less costly, but both parties should have ways to handle a large bulky item on both ends to drop it off and pick it up. Terms of shipping and assistance from seller should be agreed on before the purchase and exchange of funds. I have used FedEx Ground and one horror story ....I actually built and shipped the crate to the seller. The engine was dropped at the terminal in Long Island, NY.....it disappeared somewhere in Ohio on its trip to New Mexico. Many many calls and weeks later, the crate 'found' the engine was in 'salvage' in Ohio. It wound up that the intermodal shipment had been in a train derailment and was just scooped up off the ground with a loader. FedEx agreed to pull it out of salvage and send it on...I received it full of dirt as the top of the crate had broken out. I had sent strapping material, but I have no idea if it was used and used correctly.... Put shipping addresses in multiple places on the crate and affix shipping details to the engine itself. This is a must!!! Query "shipping an engine" and read away.... they also have freight calculators that will demonstrate the differences between a palletized and a crated shipment. best of luck and remember 'there is no free education'
I shipped a complete SBC short block, with heads from Denver to Florida last September and used this company. The total cost was $800. residential lift gate pickup to residential lift gate delivery. Excellent communication and tracking along the way. Trip only took 3 days. Had to crate and palletize the motor. Used one of the shipping containers that are used for just such purposes, which are on the web. Plus, the shipping container can be used for storage as well. Shipping container was around $200, which the buyer paid for. Try Central Transport or Old Dominion. Cheapest way.==== Get engine to their dock for shipping. Ship to buyers nearest dock. Don't bother buying insurance. They won't pay any way. Make sturdy crate is good insurance. It worked shipping engines many times for me in the past. PS; Inflation and shipping cost has killed my short block sales. Two 8BA engines ready to ship. One more 8BA and one 59L almost ready to ship.
Unfortunately I have taken a leave of absence from transporting to help my Wife deal with her cancer recovery or I probably would have been glad to help you! The cost would have been around $500.00 This is an easy job & I probably add 10 engines per year to my classic car transports. Years ago I made a rolling pallet strong enough to hold an engine & trans easily (see picture with a rare 37 Stude engine & trans I took from Florida to North Dakota on one of my trips) I roll it out on the driveway, you set your engine bolted to your pallet on mine, I winch it up in the enclosed trailer, secure it & then load the car that needs to be transported...super easy God Bless Bill https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...ar-transport-hauling-open-or-enclosed.614419/
^^^^ The prayers continue for your wife's full recovery. As previously posted, Central Transport and Old Dominion have given me good results. On-line cheapest carrier not so much. A few horror stories with LTL shipments using "load board" haulers. "Pods" may also be an option.
Email steve@enginesdirect.net I have used them on several occasions and had excellent results. Engines Direct Freight www.engineshipping.com P: 800-998-2100 F: 623-581-940
The "Residential to residential" adds a big chunk of money to the tab. Terminal to terminal saves a chunk or having it delivered to a friend in town's business saves. Even to the point of renting a U haul or truck from home Depot for a couple of hours to haul it from the terminal to home if you don't have access to a truck. The other thing is go to the local to you terminal/office of an interstate trucking company and ask about getting it done and the costs. I had to get equipment or large parts for equipment shipped from the east coast to the plant I worked in in Washington state at times and some times had to arrange the shipping from my end and contacting the office of the freight company that delivered to the plant several times a week to arrange it was the simple way even though it ended up being handled by them and another company that they worked with to their terminal somewhere mid way. Your call on the residential pickup and delivery though. Along with a bit of hassle that is just your hot rod dollars being tossed in the fire for the convenience.
To bad Bill's out of the game, he's one of the best. Frames shipped me a FH short block successfully but he had it well crated and it went to a business. I've shipped several over the years from my hot rod shop. Always well crated and I had the ability to load. My advise is build a substantial wood crate that can be handled by a fork lift, use your engine hoist to get it in the back of your truck, take it to the truck line of choice. Since you have no account with the truck line your at their mercy as to classification. Who's paying the shipping , shipper or receiver? If the receiver is paying let him pick the available truck lines. Follow frames advise and forget insurance, I've had lots of damage over my 40+ years of shipping and never collected a dime from the trucking company. There's lots of tricks to the shipping business but learning them can be painful. Try to pay the freight up front, it helps prevent surprises st the destination. Ship it then cross your fingers.
Engine Shippers out of Phoenix,AZ. I shipped a complete flathead that I crated from Hilo,HI to Windsor,CA .It was $375 and they handled it all the way.Ocean freight to Long Beach,CA then UPS to a dock in Windsor,CA.
Any chance you might be able to ship the engine in two containers ? A shortblock would occupy a much smaller space/weight/crate. Might be able to deliver that to a freight office more easily. Then ship the heads via UPS. If you pack the heads yourself in separate boxes, probably about $100 to send them. You can get boxes just big enough for heads. I had some cast iron and some aluminum heads shipped that way and it was $100 or less. Then I had the jerk that promised to pack and ship some alum Cad heads. When it came time to ship, he decided he didn't want to bother and took them to UPS and told them to give it the full zoot treatment plus $5000 worth of insurance (that I didn't need because of Paypal). We had agreed I would add $60 for shipping. I figured the alum heads would cost less than Cast Iron ones to ship. I thought I would just send him any small difference later, but we had agreed on $60. I figured maybe another $30-$40 at most. When they arrived, they were together in a HUGE box with all kinds of packing inside. Did I mention that the box was HUGE........ Absolutely ridiculous ! He sent me a note telling me the total for the shipping was $330. I called and talked to the UPS guy who packed all the stuff and he said if the guy had packed it himself and not gotten $5k insurance it would have been about $100. I sent the guy another $40. My point is that there are ways to do this reasonably affordably if you put a little effort into it. Try looking at "Freightquote.com" They give quotes for numerous companies and then you pick one. Something else I shipped got a $1000 quote. A friend of mine checked to see what his business could get it shipped for...$500. I had to take the item to the local freight office but with Freightquote it went for bout $230 or so.
Several years ago, I sold a 215 cu in Olds aluminum engine to a guy out west. I talked to a guy in our area who builds racing engines, mainly for racing boats. He said bring the engine down, he strapped it on a crate, called my buyer and they agreed on a price. Engine builder had a customer going west with his hydroplane to race, and they put it in his truck. Everybody was happy.
I have used FreightPros several times. It's air freight and a lot more affordable than most think. Not everything fits there shipping criteria, but Motors are a fit. Shipping weight and footprint is all you need to tell them. The quote is free. 512-617-9367. I bought this 40 Ford front seat in Northern Michigan. It was on a pallet and wrapped marked Top Load only. Did dock to dock to Portland Oregon for $150.oo just last November. From drop off to pick up 48 hours. No hiccup's, that's priceless.
I'm giving it to the guy who done the top end to use as his businesses dyno mule until he is done with it. For the price of shipping, the info I will get in return about all the heads and manifolds etc he will be testing, it's worth it to me.
Thank you for all the help guys.... I looked at a uhaul, that'll cost me about $2500 in miles, so then I looked at buying a shitty OT truck to take it up there since I only work 10 24hr shifts a month... But old dominion freight came up quite a few times so I gave them a call, they have a rate for anything less than 48" x 48" pallet and told me it'll be about $460 to ship.... It's getting picked up residential, as luck would have it they're only about 18 minutes from my house ! And it's going straight to the shop up there where it'll be used as a dyno mule, so, lift gate to a business for $460, I can't turn that down. Uline sell heavy duty wood crates to ship them in so I'll pony up for one of those.... There were a few plastic shipping crates on marketplace around my area, but this is a sizeable tunnel ram engine with full accessories so I figured at least I'll know it'll fit in a wood crate I build around it.
Yea, one of the things I'm scared of the most is having crap stacked on top of it and potentially having the top of the crate bust....
The last engine I shipped was a 57 392 Hemi from Toledo Ohio to Long Beach California, Dock to Dock was $185.That was about 6 years ago. Even dropping at the company dock on one end can save you $100. One thing to remember, cube costs more that weight. Common carriers seldom weigh out but often cube out. a 36 by 48 pallet costs less than a 48 by 48 pallet at the same weight.
Bill, I can't believe I missed this serious news about your wife. I am so sorry. I hope she has a quick and full recovery and all my best wishes for the two of you.
What a beautiful Olds Rocket and transmission ! Now that’s real class right there,,,,,excellent crate job too ! Tommy
Yea, my problem is I don't own a truck, pallet jack or engine hoist anymore, so when I want to move an engine to the dyno shop or whatever, it costs me more than that $100 to rent all those things each time so it'll cost me more than that to drop it off. Great tip on the cubing out thing! Thanks!
Don 't want to hijack the O.P's thread, but wanted to say thank you to all my friends here on the HAMB for the continued thoughts & prayers for Laura! Now that the spine surgery is done (3 weeks), she starts 5 straight days of radiation Monday followed by chemo in the following weeks. I am home to care for her 24/7 until further notice. Glad you got your shipping needs figured out at a reasonable rate @54chevkiwi ! God Bless Bill https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum...ar-transport-hauling-open-or-enclosed.614419/
Bill, I’m sorry to hear about your wife. My prayers for her and you. Your at top notch hauler and human being in my book, so she must be too! Denny
