Just got the new issue of Classic Trucks magazine. Interesting article on the Southern 358, and 408. It looks like a chopped and smoothed '54 Chev pickup. Sold only as turn-key for about the same price as a new Silverado. 50-state emissions legal, airbags (and not the kind that raise and lower the ride), and a 36mo/36,000 mile bumper-to-bumper warranty. http://www.southernmotorcompany.com What do you think?
Wonder what they were smoking at the brainstorming session when they decided to put a Mustang engine in a "Chevy" truck. That ought to be a deal breaker for anyone who would want a Chevy truck.
Yep, all chevy and no bombs to remove or OBD2. And for less than half of what GM wants for a Siverado. Plus his YOM license plate would be easy- 2006
"That's a good lookin' old chevy you have there, what's it got in it?" "Actuallly it's kind of Chevy replica of sorts and it has a 4.6L ford." Other than that it looks good, but $55K???
If it was a Ford body with a Chevy motor in it, no one would question it. Interesting that it has a passenger car style grille in it, I haven't seen that before on AD trucks, pretty neat. It'll be interesting to see if they sell.
weellll, i wonder if the hood has a ballistic blanket for keeping the spark plugs from denting the hood you guys that work on 4.6/5.4'sll know what i'm talking about...
I'm no good at identifying late model engines. Their website called it a Mustang engine, but since you used 3 exclamation marks, I'll take your word for it.
Because the specs say it's a Mustang V8. The color pallette is really cool. That would be great for trying to decide on a color.
i think folks are assuming its a ford because it says its a "mustang" engine?!?!?!?....and it does say on page 2 of the profile tab that its a ford drivetrain..............and a few pages later it says that it can be serviced at any of over 4000 ford dealers..........i think its an f150 in "drag"!!!!
What specs? From the company's site or the magazine feature? If it's in the magazine feature, that means someone f'd up the translation of "4.6" into Mustang, which it isn't. If it's on the company site, that means they either changed the engine after the feature. I want to check this out further.
Yeah, they did change the specs. It's now called a "Southern 358"...the truck we featured was a 308. Why the Ford drivetrain, I have no idea, but I don't think that's gonna go over too well.
Who cares?! I hope they sell a schittload of 'em. Like the other thread on this topic, I think they will look great parked next to the owner's designer chopper on their painted garage floor. I don't think most of the people on this board is who their demographic is anyway.
I like it, but, then I always liked the late 47 thru 53 Chevy trucks. The grill work reminds me of the 46 thru 48 chevy car. They(early Chevy trucks) were not the powerful trucks their ad alludes to. Maybe the second generation 55. I disagree with the Ford drive train. Looks like at the time it is GM. The info says "Soon to be Released Mustang V-8". Jimmy is right, this is not aimed at the build it from junk yard stuff guy. At $55,000.00, it leaves most out. We now return you to our regularly scheduled programming. Smoke 'em if you got 'em! At Ease! Fall out!!!
sweet (not the truck) the color palet is awesome, I've been looking for a specific color for my 49 chevy for some time....this is going to sound weird, but I have a photo of a 50 chevy on my desktop, when you go to shut the computer down it slowly transitions the picture from the original color to black and white. I wanted one of the transition colors but couldnt figure out how to freeze the frame rate where i wanted it....that hit the nail on the head!
a ford motor in a chevy is just dumb they be better off if they did a f100 with a ford that would be cool or a chevy with a chevy
I read somewhere that the prototype was Chevy powered and the plan was to build the trucks with GM drivetrains so they could be serviced at any dealer. Then the deal with GM fell through so they went to Ford who agreed to supply a drivetrain that could be waranteed. Guess they should have built an F100.
I read where GM wouldn't work with them on drivetrains and Ford was more than willing. I guess they are okay if you like a truck built with overeas produced metric body parts. I still like my old iron.
Its gonna go down in flames...kinda like the fiberglass Mercs did. Now, why didn't they spend the money on making those fuckers??? Brand new stamped '51 Mercury steel, $35,000.
