As some know I have a thread on the beginning of building a 354 Hemi. Its going to be a mild street motor, 10:1 compression otherwise basically a stock rebuild, I’m having the cam reground, I spoke with the cam grinder today about ideas for specs, but thought I would ask what others have used.

When I ordered a cam from HH they asked CID, C/R, ******, rear axle, vehicle weight & how I planned on driving. Might give them a call and ask.....

I don’t need to call and ask them, I’m capable of determining it myself, I was curious what others were using for their application. Might trigger something I hadn’t thought of is all.

Hemis breath well so unless you want (the idle) I would stay conservative say around 220 at .050 for a street motor. on a regrind you will be limited by the blank.

The numbers we threw around were that 220 @0.050 and 280 ish lift at the cam.

The stock core will be good for 0.470" lift and 230@050. You could squeeze a bit more out of it but for your engine you don't need more. I'd stay around 0.460 and 225@050. Keep the 112° LSA.
Keep in mind that regrinding an oem core will cause loss of base circle and that dictates a new set of adjustable pushrods...add $200+ or so to the cost.
Many of the 'big guys' have new cores on a semi-regular basis. Call your favorite company and ask if they a 354 core and how much for a fresh cam. I recently called Crower and they had a couple cores available. Price was around $300.

I understand the need for the adjustable pushrod’s, he is an old school cam grinder very knowledgeable, he’s going to resurface the lifters as well. Sounds like him and I were in the ballpark, which I knew, but always good to hear from others. Because it’s a mild motor and I drive the hell out of the truck I’m not looking for wild.

  10. Hot heads has a new Hyd . With the specs you are looking for.
    .465 lift with 221 duration at .050 ,,with 111 LC ,,for 370 bucks .

Tommy, adding the exchange and all of that increases it m***ively for me, to regrind the cam and lifters is $300 Canadian.

Whereas $370 US is basically $500 for me

  13. I understand completely,,,,,I was just giving you another possibility if it was the only option .
I like reground cams myself ,,,I have used several of them,,,,,they always worked great !
And you know the stock core is a good foundation for a new cam profile .

I have a super nice set of reground solid lifters for a Mopar,,,,they look just like new !

This is going to be a great project for you,,,,you will be very pleased when you get it installed and running !

Understand completely Tommy and appreciate any input and thoughts.

I’m thinking no, I have to finish the Barracuda for June, fix the deer damage on the truck and I’m thinking while it’s apart I may fix a few other things I’m not happy with, I’m not even sure it’ll be back together this year. The Hemi program is getting done as the budget allows!

I had Schneider Cams grind the cam in my avatar. It's a 288/435 cam. Sounds great with a nice lope at idle, good power thru out the rpm range, and pulls strong from idle to full throttle. I am running 56 p***enger heads reworked by Joe Reath and were ported and 426 valves added. Great combination for the last 15 years.

Who’s grinding your cam? Shadbolt in Vancouver is gone but there is a guy in Armstrong BC i believe. Or is your guy in Alberta?
