ok, heres the deal, i have got the buick up and running, running pretty good too. any way i am running 1 7/8" lakes with no baffels, a pontiac 350 w/ra heads and stock cast exhaust manifolds. its got that highway sound, and i dig it! but the cops dont and they dont like me anyways. i did a search and didnt come up with anything on baffels or a way to make them a little less brappy. i went to the local harley shop tonight and did a little dumpster diving and scored a pair of new pulloff mufflers, pphh, just a thought. any of you got any ideas on how to make this thing a little less noticeable?
I've used the Car Chemistry as a baffle; alone it doesn't do too much but it helps quiet things down if you stuff it w/ fibergl*** packing from a motorcycle place. http://www.jegs.com/webapp/wcs/stor...irect&categoryId=13783&parentCategoryId=10265
If the cops already have your ticket signed and stamped before you hit the tarmac you probably ought to just run a pair of REAL mufflers in the stock location and a "U" turn pipe back up the side of it back to the lakes pipes. Contrary to some common current opinions, Kustoms were not usually noisy or as noisy as Hotrods.
Along these same lines, My hotrod has 8 straight pipes. I have been looking for a way to quiet it down a little but still be able to open them back up from time to time. I was thinking an insert type of baffel, with a set screw. I picture it looking like the pipe the inside of a gl***pack, but small enough to slide inside each pipe. Anybody know where I can get such an animal?
1/2 minute with the search ****on produces this: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=43062&highlight=baffle

A simple rod with staggered washers welded to it and kept in the pipe with a set screw will cut the noise enough. But Dr J's right, If you know the local law has your number (for whatever reason) run a "stock" exhaust...until they get someone else' number.
The VW baffles are made for a tapers cone, like the VW Stinger Megaphones, and lakes style headers. They will not fit in lake pipes, even if they did fit in the tube, you wouldn't be able to get them around the bends in the lake pipes.
Yeah, realized that right after asking. Thanks for the response. Sounds like chicken wire and gl*** may be the way to go.
hey man, i did the chicken wire deal it helped somewhat. i went to the harley dealer across the field last and did some dumpster diving, came out with a pair of new pull off mufflers that almost fit between the lakes and manifold j pipe. then i went to auto zone and opened all the boxes of cherry bombs and found two that are shorter than the HD muffs and with a little help from some old bends will work out quite nice. hope it dont kill all the sound. but keeps the do rights off my tail.
how bout on a 3/8 cable to get around the bends? our local law is a bunch of rookie cowboys, my shop has a lot of long black stripes in the street and lights on late at night. and some of my customers look a little on the shadey side, but it all fits the life style. i aint backin up. sorry bout the rant.
You know what works really good. Go to home Depot and ask for lath. It's used for plastering walls. I work construction,so I just brought some home from work. Roll it up like a taquito, and stick it in the end. You dont even have to attatch it. The more you put in,the quieter it is. My sons pipes have Harley baffles, but they are straight, not bent on the ends. The stuff is pretty cheap. CAREFUL,it's sharp!
