put it in first gear and see how many times you have to turn the input shaft to get the output to go around once. Some of those T10's had a pretty deep first like 3:1, if so you could get by with 3.0 gears in the rear

***uming a close ratio trans (2.20 first) and a 4.11 rear gear would give an overall ratio of 9.042.
If you have a wide ratio trans with maybe a 2.88 first and a 3.0 rear it would be 8.64 so, pretty close plus you will have the big block grunt to help out. best of both worlds

I just checked the rearend is a tad under 3 turns, likely a 2.93 ge****t. It will work with big block, until Lloyd can get a better ratio. Lloyd is also getting a spare center section casting he can work on gearing and then just swap the center out. So if anyone has some gears or spool/posi carrier let Lloyd know.

Terry's house of rearends. Wait that might be taken wrong, LOL

Lloyd...you have a trans already I take it...but I like those late T10s..like 1979-81 or so...some have really deep first gears...as low as 3.42 1st. Some came aluminum case..the later ones cast iron. Iron is preferable of course for strength. It allows tall rearend gears for easy highway cruising and still gives you a first gear mechanical advantage poke... I have an over the counter Power Brute version of that trans..they were sold at speed shops and I wouldn't sell it for any amount of money. Cast iron case..high nickel gears...nearly indestructible.

The 9.3 is an awesome rearend...happy you're using that instead of that later deal.....also glad my Bell Auto Parts 37 1/2 Chevy already has one in it. Probably installed in the late 60s? Looks brand new...

FabCraft Metal Works has everything you need, and or don't need for the 9.3. That who did my entire rear. I have a thread on it on here.

Yeah I already looked at everything they have. You've obviously got lots of money Mike! :D:D:D:D I see that I can buy a ge****t for $400, and a spool for the same money. I've learned that trying to impress you guys, is very expensive, and benefits me in no way, form, or fashion lmao!!

Not in garage, but it's fairly wide. I would estimate 62-63 inches. 62 Pontiacs were in the wide-body era.

Lloyd, if that's the same 4 speed I'm thinking about, I think it from a 79 Firechicken and don't remember if it has 3 or 4 grooves on the input... I think it has 4... which makes it a 2.88 first, I think...

The '79 Firebird still had a 400 or 403 Olds...so likely would not have a low first geared trans. In 1980 and 81 when they went to Chevy 305s in Trans Ams and Z28s so they are the main source of low first geared Super T10s . They had to make up the lack of performance in the weak 305s with gearing..

Yeah, but it seems like it has 3 grooves. It's at the old location still. Along with about 5 truck loads of parts I have to move. I have an NP833 that has a 3.09 first gear. I'll figure out what I'm gonna do when I get there. I'm thinking I'll run a 2.93 open rear until I get the other center section put together. :D

You'd probably like the 833 better if that's the case. The clutch would like it alot better too! ;)

Will the big block ring the guts out of the 833?

Depends on what you're using for rear tire's, I guess. Let the tire's be the Fusible-Link and the rest of the driveline should live a decent life.
I don't really have any experience with those boxes', I've always run Muncie's with mid to high 4-series gear's.

Just for info. I have a 69 GTO rear end under my 56 Pontiac. I believe they are 61 inch, (Drum to drum).

I have 9 inch slicks under mine without cutting the quarters. Granted, I can't remove them without undoing the rear shackles. I forget what wheel offsets I had to use.

That was the original A833. This was the latter. Chrysler owned New Process. They made the NP833, It has the Chrysler pattern where it bolts to the bellhousing, but the bellhousing bolts to a Chevy block. It's actually an overdrive transmission. It was used in Chevy trucks through the 80's.
