I was told that Dick Landy builds the record setting off the charts tip top LSR valve in block true flatheads.
I saw a fairly exotic LSR flathead in person. It's a computer controlled, injected, blown alcohol flathead that's been the brainchild of a pro engine builder. To go 5 mains, he milled off the bottom of the block and added a main structure that is a separate piece. The exhaust came up through the intake area the same as the others shown, the block was hardblocked but not with the standard stuff. The cooling was via running alcohol as the fuel and routing the coolant through the one off heads. The valve order was rearranged so it no longer had the two center exhaust ports side by side. The combustion chamber, piston top and head work was impressive, modeled several times. Pistons were full custom pieces from Ross, billet high lift cam etc...
Way higher HP on the dyno than the other exotic flatty motors I've read about.

People get way to wound up about the 3 main bearings in Flatheads.

See the engine below. This is quickest flathead dragster in the world. Makes close to a 1000 hp on a 60% nitro load. 3 main bearings and a girdle out of Flathead Jack's catalog. As far as I know, it has never put the crank down onto the track.

Flathead cranks are very stiff (weigh a few lbs more than a 428 FE crank), and the main bearings are very wide and support a large surface area. They will take more abuse than most armchair internet experts give them credit for.

Not the worlds' fastest but it is the fastest flathead I have built. And with almost 3000 miles on it now, it has proven itself to be a very trouble-free hot rod motor pushing north of 300 HP and it looks cool to boot!

Flatheads have a bad rep, i.e. cracks, overheating, those 3 mains, oil dripping, smelly, expensive, etc. Only the latter applies to my engine.

Show me some more powerful flatheads on the street or strip.

Stacks of $100 bills, arranged in the shape of a V8.

I remember that picture from an early '50s HRM. Homemade log intake manifolds bolted to the exhaust ports, and eight exhaust stacks sticking up out of the intake ports. '36-'48 Cadillac V8s did flathead porting the right way.
