Technical Any body actually doing any fab work?

Curious if anybody is doing any actual hands on fab work lately? Haven't noticed much posting on any.

Yes I like the "how to" fab work posts, love learning seeing others work. I like learning new techniques /skills etc.

So if anybody is doing any "fab" work post it up!!

They are aluminum. Milled a half-moon shape in a 3/4 plate to use as a buck, put the countersink side of the rivet in the half-moon cut out, peened the other side. The half-moon shape also contoured the rivet.

 

I made this lower dash panel to cover my AC unit and provide a good place to mount the side vents in my 34 Ford. Fabricating is my favorite part of the build and there used to be a lot of it on the HAMB. Unfortunately, when it shifted gears to strictly traditional, lots of the good fabricators either left or quit posting.

 

@Pat Pryor I got you, I did the same thing making rivets for my ak-47 builds ! Ended up making my own jig for that.

What are we fabbing? I drew these up and we cut them on a waterjet this week. Does that count? They aren’t parts, but I make those too sometimes.

 

Not much fabrication I do qualifies as HAMB friendly.

The last time I posted something I fabricated, it was picked apart by "The Experts" that have not produced a road worthy vehicle in years, and probably never have, but my "poor quality, according to them" build is still on the road with nearly 100,000 miles.

Why bother?

Then lets add that the computer crash I had last week took out all 900+ pictures, I couldn't post now if I wanted to, which I don't.

 

I recently built this steel tube bumper out of 16 gauge pipe then polished it

 

Beautiful job, now show us the trick on the domed ends !

 

I found some press formed half round caps on Etsy of all places, I got to carried away with the welding and finishing with a flap disc and didn't take photos.

 

I’ve been fabricating, but using C-clamps, angle iron and cardboard patterns isn’t really very innovative. I got the results I wanted.

 

Sometimes in the heat of battle with this stuff, we don’t always think about taking pictures, sometimes the phone is in the house, sometimes just dirty hands.

 

Kinda have to if you own an old hot rod / race car.

In my new to me, sorta (when the rear wheels get here, then photos) HAMB friendly car...
I made a new shifter mount. Moved the shifter, up, forward, and sideways from its original location. Making the "lift off" hood into a hinged hood.

Most probably more to come just on this car.

Have two others that will require MUCH..."fab" work.

I just re-did my 1x1 shifter bracket too, to hold the new shifter, drilled 43 speed holes in it to try and lighten it up a bit. New USA made Kilduff shifter is heavier and wider to fit all the Lenco looking levers, sure ate up the space real fast in the small cab confines.

Did all the pipe bending for my Belly Tank build at home with a hand pump hydraulic bender, fab'd all the other bits too. JW

I bought hemispheres from King Architectural metals in Texas for various jobs when I had my fab business going. The ones I bought were mild steel but they might have them in stainless and aluminum too, but I never needed them so never looked.

You just have to look harder. Custom car posts often get pushed out very quickly, by guys asking how to fix ruined chops, or how to paint cars with Rustoleum and a brush. I found this drywall lift scrapping and thought it would make a great throttle padel! Six hours of cutting, (built the steel mount as well) working at the drill press, the lathe, and T.I.G. welding I think it came out pretty good!



I needed an idler pulley for the racecar. Being a purest and refusing to use modern parts I decided a Corvair unit would fit the bill and built a bracket to work on a 261 Chevy! I still need to finish the upper support.
