OK I got with this monster qc, supposed to be a Winters Compick but has Benson cast in housing. Anyway I was going to run a more traditional one (ie smaller ) but this big ****** is kinda growing on me so... can I pull the wide five hubs, disk brakes, aluminum axle tubes, and axles and replace with steel tubes, 5x5 1/2 axles and drum brakes and use with a buggy spring? Where do I get parts? Any used stuff oput there? Failing that, how do these things mount with the brackets it has and does anyone make a wide 5 disk brake hub for I beam fronts? I need all the info I can get about this because as you've probably figured out I don't know jack about this type of rearend.
Looks like no one want to chime in and answer your questions, so I guess I'm it . This is the Q/C used for oval tracking. Has a 10" dia. ring gear. Uses 10 spline Q/C gears, which are available every place cheap. It's plenty strong enough for anything you'll do. Winters, Frankland, Jones, Tiger and now Benson have all manufactured these. I think the Benson who made part of your rear is Johnny Benson's dad. Johnny used to drive Nextel Cup cars and is now running the truck series. Your rear has aluminum tubes, so all the brackets bolt to it. Probably not good for what you want to do. I'd convert to 3" steel tubes and 9" flanged Ford axles for the street. Go here for info on Hot Rod 9" Q/C's: http://www.wintersperformance.com/catalogs/03StreetRodRears/index1024.htm Sell all the wide 5 stuff to an oval tracker. Put it on Ebay. It'll sell, brakes and all. Split your rear apart. If it has anything other than a spool you scored. A spool won't work on the street. But a variety of differentials is available. The Detroit Locker is probably the best one for the street. You can put 3/4 ton wide 5 on the front axle. I posted a response about this not too long ago. Do a search here for Q/C's and you'll find a bunch that's been posted.
Speedway engineering its in Ca. I think the website is www.1speedway.com. If not just do a goggle search......
Speedway's Q/C rear end is a different design. Uses a different size R&P. Nice unit, I owned one a few years ago. But we're comparing apples and oranges.
Ditto on the aforementioned responses. The only thing I can add is check out the search function. There have been lots of questions and answers about quickies...Brakes, axles, spools, etc. Bottom line is YES, you can put this rear in your hot rod..it does take a bit of effort...nothing you can't handle. Check out the search. After that, if you have specific questions, feel free to shoot me a PM. Good luck, -Abone. PS. Here's mine.
Mine's a Frankland but the same process will work. I machined new steel tubes and used the 'Strange' big bearing Ford ends from Jegs, the axle shafts are from a Ford 3/4 ton that I sent to Moser Eng. to be shortened and resplined to fit the locker.. the rest of the hardware can be fabbed to fit your car / suspension. CC
I'd add to this if I could, but we specialize in the medium size-ie; V8 quickie. I do own a Richmond version of a GN or Big Car rear end with all of the things done to the ones above for our belly tank that is made out of Mag, but when I get around to building that belly tank, I will most likely be using a Cyclone since that is what we make. These big guy quickies are quite strong are very common but IMHO, I like the looks & function of the V8 version as well as the history connection. lots of stuff available for the big guy too-Try the Quickchange Exchange. I believe in they're in Santa Fe Springs, CA. They make a *****en Auburn/Detroit locker set up for the Big Guy and should have everything that you need to put it on the street.
Thanks for the help guys, it's what I needed to know. Seein that one under flamedabone's A and the very sanitary install of ProEnfo motivate me to go ahead.
A bone im doing a 32 sedan on 32 rails with a frankland etc what width wheels are your rears? i love the stance, i have 15x14 halibrands and 15 4 1/2s and thinking the rears are way too wide.....
Speedway's in house Q/C uses a hypoid ring and pinion that's smaller in diameter than a Winters, Frankland, Halibrand, Tiger, Jones, etc., which use a 10" spiral bevel ring and pinion. The Speedway rear uses the same 10 spline Q/C gears, but after that not too much is the same. Their rear ends also won't take the abuse of a high horse power engines. They tell ya' that right up front. It's primarily because they use a hypoid gear set. This also causes the driveshaft yoke to be higher on the centersection housing. This means less floor board & driveshaft tunnel clearance. Go here and take a look: http://www.1speedway.com/Center_Kits.htm They don't manufacture complete apples and oranges Q/C's but they sell good quality parts for either taste.
