Recently I bought a 1968 bel air originally a 6 cylinder car .. that someone put a 396 big block in (68-72) I believe the casting number Says and I don’t know much about it…. I’m looking for a fan shroud that fits .. i ordered one from cl***ic that said small block thinking maybe I’d get lucky but of course I didn’t , the fan hits .. I’m also not sure what radiator is in it if it’s original 6 cylinder rad and idk what the clutch fan is off of im hoping someone else on here has a big block biscayne or bel air that can share what fan and shroud they are using so I can get mine sorted out
Small block has a deeper shroud than the big block. And im pretty sure 68 is one year only on the design. I have seen on a few forums about using 66-67 Chevelle big block shroud is about the closest to the dimensions, but it still has some modifying.
Does your 68 big block have a short water pump or a long water pump? It should have the short style pump, and the alternator would be on the drivers side of the engine. 1968 is the last year (except Corvette and Chevy/GMC truck) that the short water pump was used. Long style water pump was used 1969 and later on most p***enger cars. I've seen dozens of Chevy's that has had a big block swap done, even if a big block was a factory option, that has the long style pump, pulleys, brackets, etc. (whatever was on the engine used) on a pre 69 car, and the owner has radiator/shroud fitment issues.
My 67 shares a lot of design w 68's - She was a 250 - then an LS3 now and LSX w a power adder - aaaand...it's fixin to get swapped again ( just had Don Thomas in Amarillo build me a 540BBC) but - if you just go Dewitts radiator and get the fans w the rad - you'll be good...no shroud... I actually don't know that I ever saw mine on there - was gone long ago. never been an issue unless you're looking for originality...
