An Opel GT drag car. Still traditional in a particular time period sort of way, but well outside our usual '64 and older rule of law.

    Something like this

Man, this whole off topic thing is weird. Kinda like watching the nudie channel while you parents aren't home.

I rode in the package tray of one of those until I was too big to fit. Before that mom drove a TR7 and I would sit in the p***enger floor well if we all three were in it. Child safety of the 70's!

Good luck finding an Opel GT that isn't so rusty you can't even cut it up for a drag car. It would make a fun one if you could find a decent body.

  6. In the late 1980s and 90s the rust free ones were allready being shipped back this way. Even with totally destroyed interior /exterior by California sun.

I remember when this Opel hit the streets at the Car Craft Street Machine Nationals. The Hemi ran on alcohol.
I cruised one night with him and Howard’s blown big block ‘58 Corvette, I was following the Opel, the alcohol fumes were so bad I could hardly see. Wonder if it still exists? The Corvette does not, my Comet still does.

This car has been my "Grail" car forever. Steve Group's Street Funny/ Street Fuel Altered. Last I heard it was in Illinois.

There's a guy in my hometown with an Opel GT that was being built as Gas cl*** drag car in 1970. Been stillborn about 80% built. Saw it last year, still the same. Not for sale.

There was guy in Mesa that had 12 of them, shipping them oversea, I wanted to buy a front suspension, offered, begged, he told me to leave. Quite a sight to see that many all in one place.

Almost looked like a dealership. !!:(.

Subscribing........just about any power plant will make it a rocket. It should be a fun build. Wish I lived closer, I enjoy helping and getting my hands dirty.

The RX-7 is similar with a huge transmission tunnel and easier to find, here's mine with an sbc/4spd and radiused wheelwells. Firewall/engine moved back 10", with 12" wide wheels the 275/60 radials look huge...

Anyone in Minnesota looking for one of these?
Spotted one at the old GM dealership in Pine River a few weeks back. Looked like a driver.

Wasn’t someone making a fibergl*** bodied
Opel GT at one time? Might have been a race only thing, too lightweight for highway duty.

The Italians invented rust, but the Germans refined the process and then patented it. Good luck finding one.

  26. There was a choice of three 4 cylinders, 1200cc, 1600cc, 1900cc, transmission automatic or 4 speed.

I'm sure it was probably the 1200cc and was a stick.

If ever there was a car that needed a serious V8 infusion, it was the Opel GT. I can't look at one without seeing a huge blown big block or something.

I had a few over the years. never set up as a dedicated drag car, just a spirited driver. did a 3.8 buick under the hood in the stock body, then was working a supercharged 4.6 liter Northstar / custom ch***is when I sold the project. during college, we used to get 5 people in the car. 2 in the p***enger seat, 2 in the package tray. looked like a ringling car when we stopped somewhere.

the two bodies I sold with the whole project back in 2017 are both for sale again in northern Wisconsin. the one body was acid dipped, then sealed prior to storage in 2008
