WHEN I GOT THESE , I was told they were from a real mc coy ww11 bomber.... when I looked at them they just looked like fiber gl*** dune buggy seats.... but to day and ol timer stopped by... his eyes locked on them like a bird dog... he's one of those pro pickers and hits up yard and estate sales,... and usually finds some rare stuff...

he was showing me that they aren't modern fibergl*** , but made with a cotton linen and looks likesome bender wood...

so the question... is he right???

I found some numbers on one of the seats that is part of the mold, I know metal was at a shortage.... so do I have cool OG bomber seats... or old dune buggy seats...

    found this on the web..

    1. Bomber Seats: Some original WWII aircraft seats were made of phenolic, which is an early resin and cloth compound. These seats have the same appearance as other highly desired bomber seats. They were commonly used in aircraft during that era1.

I will take them off your hands, since you did not post any pictures of them. My dune buggy buddy needs a new set of seats anyway.... :D

That link looks like a metal seat to me. They used a bunch of different materials for seats in WW2, aluminium, steel, fabric, wood and composites. Post a pic.

This is a composite Spitfire seat.

here's some pics, as you can see... they are not modern fibergl***, but some kind of composit..and they have the aluminum mounts on the bottoms,...be kinda cool if they were for sure WW-2, but thats what the ol timer told me.. and you how they are..hard to tell the ones that know because the ones that think they know make the most noise...

I also have the snap in cushions with new upholstery... the backs fit nice, but the bottoms could fit better...

I agree... the fact that they rusted out makes one believe that they aren't aluminum either...

No it’s from a Spitfire, I think it’s just the height adjustment mechanism, so you can easily move it

Looks like thin wood with cloth glued over it then varnished.

I’m no WWII aviation expert, but there is something about the hardware that doesn’t look WWII-ish. Specifically the fasteners.

I was referring to the front hardware. What type heads do those screws take? They almost look like Torx and we know those weren't around in WWII. Allen heads were around but were not inexpensive and not a common aircraft tool back then. And are they painted black, anodized, or ?.... Regardless, I can't see them taking the time to treat or coat screws that weren't visible, increase costs, and take longer to make. They needed to get those planes built fast to push those pesky **** back across the Rhein.

Bomber seat - screw head enlarged.png
Screw enlarged, not much resolution left. I'm thinking clutch head screws. Like this:

Photo "borrowed" from Chevys of the 40s. I remember them on the door of a 1941 Chevy pickup.

pretty sure through the years, these seats have been in and out of numerous hot rods... the front plates are old AF, where as the rears look newer to the car they were last in... the fasteners on the front have been replaced???.who knows..but up close they are allen head.. upon a closer look, and examining the holes drilled in the bottom , they're not wood, but some type of layered looking composite, super light, and they don't flex like modern fiber gl***.. it could very well be that the front mounts are OG, and are in the OG location that were rivited in.... then replaced with the allen heads because they were loose... there;s no signs of any other mounting holes.... but just my opinion, the material matches the
PHENOLIC discription more than the Micarta , and I have no idea why the font changed LOL f'n old guy in a young mans world

Tangent: a radiator fan shroud is something which can be hard to picture looking right in a period engine compartment. Making it in grp and trying to match that slightly translucent, yellowy-browny early composite look might be something to look at?

Haven't seen clutch head screws in years. Used to be common, 50s mostly, in some GM applications and camping trailers. Probably have some drivers for them in some corner of the shop.

There’s some aircraft museums around Vegas aren’t there? Find one of the restoration volunteer’s there, or the shop. If they’re WWII, those guys will know.
