Been getting some work in on the banger - as I went to put the front shocks back on I realized the frame holes were egged out (badly) - not sure how I didn’t notice those before but have decided to leave the welding, grinding and primer / paint for a bit further down the road.

Shift tower reassembled and good to go.

Got to work tearing down the bell housing and gearbox - everything came apart reasonably easily other than pedal shaft which is stuck in place. One bearing also causing some grief - will tackle both again tomorrow.

Recently picked up a 39 rebuilt transmission but am in need of a Clings adaptor (or Clings type) to mount it. Clings is not currently in production given the ownership transition and all the typical vendors are out of stock. If anyone has one on the shelf they don't need please PM me. Thx.

While I wait for the Clings to go back into production, I made some progress on the bell housing and the original trans rebuild this weekend. IMG_1690.jpeg IMG_1691.jpeg IMG_1694.jpeg IMG_1695.jpeg IMG_1696.jpeg

Waiting on some new bearings but in the meanwhile got everything cleaned up and prepped for reassembly.

Looking good, my Banger gear box will need some attention soon. Popping out of top. You'll be glad you did all this work now ;)

I just dove in, didn't pull anything apart, you know the path of least resistance, the easy way, the road straight & wide,....
& Ensured one of frustration & hold ups as I fix the problems as they show up :D hahaha

  8. Perhaps I've become accustomed to my ol' Model A boxes, but I've used a Clings adaptor to fit a '36 box (not as slick as my old '39 box I know) in the latest build and it's a slower change than in the old A box. Certainly baulks at upshifts at elevated revs. Guess the synchro top to second will be easier though.

Made some progress today - gearbox and bellhousing complete and back in the car.

Looks good, Ill say this, I have driven cars with good stock rebuilt boxes and some with the swap to the V 8 trans, and other than the gearing on the A box being weird, I actually prefer it. I also put some Liquimoly SI02 in there also or something like that, it really helps the gears and makes shifting so much better.

I normally run Steep gears out back to work with the torque in the bangers. My 100 hp banger coupe had 3.27 and pulled great like a freight train!

When I had 3.78 gears, I had to drive in just second and third gear. First was worthless.

My next car will have a quick change.

This is my method as well. :p

This is an impressive build and about as different as one can get from the nonsense happening in my yard while still being a prewar banger build. Good on ya.

stubbsrodandcustom - thanks for the tip on adding the Liquimoly - will give it a try in the gearbox

RyanAK - have been following your build and love the historical photos you have been posting over there - they are very cool and provide some great inspiration!

Made a little more progress today - gearbox top installed and worked out the number of gaskets to get the proper bearing preload for the ring gear.

Ha - the body, frame and interior are a lot more “vintage” than the running gear.

Made some progress on assembling the rear end - dialing in the pinion gear tension and backlash was not as difficult as I had feared.

More progress - final assembly of rear end and finishing touches on the gearbox.

Managed to wrestle it back to a horizontal position and now it is just about ready for install.

Rear end back in the car - working on getting it ready to go back on the ground so I can check the stance. IMG_1786.jpeg IMG_1787.jpeg IMG_1789.jpeg IMG_1791.jpeg

It so clean. Even the cotter pins are lovely!

I may have missed it… what’s your rear spring setup?

I plan on running an A box and 3.78 gears but keep thinking of possibilities down the road. My self imposed “technology” cutoff date is ‘36/‘37. Plenty of time for me to research and contemplate in the moaning chair in the meantime.

Thx Ryan - main leaf in rear is reverse eye - otherwise stock spring.

Finally got some time in the garage. Managed to wrestle the radius rods into place although now I know why the prior owner had shaved a diagonal cut on the end of the radius rod bolt since alignment would not quite get into place. Ebrake hooked up and working nicely, hubs back on in the rear and drivers side rear shock back in place with some new dogbone links - can’t decide if I like the look but at least it is an easy switch back to the tube links if I don’t. Can’t wait to get it back on the ground to see how it looks…

Got the car back on the ground today - stance looks pretty good imo.

    Thanks Mikko and Joey!

Got the pedals back in and the clutch adjusted Also swapped out the pulley for a smaller one and installed a new front motor mount. Waiting on smaller fan belt which hopefully will create better clearance w lower radiator hose and pipe.

Make sure you put some sealant on the passenger side, front motor mount to housing bolt....it is a drooler.
Maybe you have and you are so sanitary I can't tell
