Hot Rods BChrismer's Survivor '40 Ford Convertible

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by bchrismer, Aug 9, 2024.

  1. Pretty much the same thing I said to @Weedburner 40 and @cvstl when I sent the picture to both of them.

  2. Spoken like a true blue hillbilly. I like.

Spent a little time rolling around on the garage floor this afternoon after church. Got the new Posies reversed eye spring and regular length shackles installed. I did make sure to swap the top two leaves to below the spring, to help it sit better once the spring settles.

Currently sits a hair lower out back, but the change in driving characteristics is night and day with losing the long shackles!

  4. Looks much better! Well, other than the exhaust hanger.

  5. One has to excuse @winduptoy for mistaking the "Hot Hamburger with Chicken Fried Steak. I'm sure all he remembers is the white gravy and how he hitched a ride back to the hotel with our server two years ago while we were at the Gathering at the Roc.

This is the "normal" Hot Hamburger from Murphy's Steak House, in Bartlesville, OK. I've had it this way, but MUCH prefer the white gravy on it. However, when you order it with white gravy, the server usually looks at you like you farted in church, then tells you that you are the spawn of Satan himself as your buddies all around the table order it the same way.

Thought of you and your shock situation yesterday as I stabbed the throttle to make turning around in a culdisack a little more fun.

ya see I may have temporarily forgotten that the car still doesn’t have any rear shocks on it. Lol that’s a LOT of ass end body roll, but it got some giggles.

Maybe we’ll both get our shocks sorted this month haha

  7. I've gotta take the coupe out to Mike Meeker's shop, so we can swap the clutch I killed in it. Hopefully while it's out there, I can drive the convertible up so we can stick it on the lift and I can at least drill a couple holes in the rear cross member to move the top of the shocks out towards the frame rails a couple inches. I just need to make sure to allow enough room between the shock and huge exhaust pipe so I don't break the hanger. I had to do that same "shock relocating" thing with my coupe several years ago, when I swapped out the parallel leaf springs to some that had reversed eyes and much less arch, causing a shallow shock angle. Much better to do on a lift than lying on your back!

  9. That one definitely got a laugh out loud from me.

One of these days when you are bored and have nothing better to do, perhaps you can come up to flyover country and play cars with me.

Man I tried drilling new shock mount holes for seemingly forever last year. I’m going to make some bolt on arraignment using existing holes this time. If there is a secret to putting holes in an old ford frame I sure don’t know it lol

  11. If I remember correctly, I drilled a pilot hole then used a step bit when I did it last time.

It's definitely on top of my KQQL Things to do list! Got to get some face-to-face time with my MO and OK Buds.

Would a hole saw work for drilling a hole for the shock mount bolt ?

  14. You just need to come up for the Gathering at the Roc Lee. That would be a good opportunity to hang out with a bunch of hoodlums. :D

So Bret, are you considering the shock stoke length in this location change? Just asking as I leaned a lesson a long time ago about that. Seems that if the shock is to long you can bottom them out and break the shock or the mount. You probably have already considered that but I had to ask.

  16. Yeah, I am, Sam. I learned that with the panel truck. Due to the extra weight of the body on the "standard" Posies parallel leaf springs, I had installed the shocks on the lowest shock mount hole that I could. I busted a perfectly good pair of shocks that way.

I wound up ordering some Monroe 555002 RV shocks. They had L1 top/bottom mounts, a 8.625 compressed, 12.750 extended, 4.125 travel. That seemed to fix my issue with it.

I don't remember where I got the Monroe Shock Spec document, but I spent a LOT of time researching before I found those.

  17. I haven't measured yet, but I believe I should be OK with the existing shocks, mainly because as I move closer towards the frame rail, I think the rise of the cross member should be close to the same distance. I'll just need to check the travel to make sure they'll still be fine.

Bret, you want me to send you the upper mounts or just bring them with me in September?

  22. Dale sent me a text message back and said he was in a "Club Meeting". When he finally called me back, I LAUGHED!!! While I am part of the CrossMembersCC and took over The Roarin' 30's of Missouri, there are NO club meetings to attend.

The good news is that Dale is sending me some of his upper shock mounts. I haven't seen them but from what he told me is that they will move the top of the shocks outward and slightly above the cross member. Once I have those installed, I can get a proper measurement, all while hoping that the existing shocks are miraculously perfect for the job. LOL

  26. We don't have meetings? I thought that is what we were doing at events in Springfield or Bartlesville/Dewey... :D

Not quite what my plans were, but one of my buddies had these tires and wheels he took off of his '40 sedan before he sold it. Didn't know how I would feel about Wimbledon White on a blackish car, but I'm kinda digging the look. I feel like it is giving off '60's era hot rod vibes.
