I was thinking of putting some lake pipes on my 55 Plymouth and happened to have a used one that is 70 inches and a little short, but I can buy an 80 inch one .not sure yet....thoughts?here is a 56 that looks pretty good 20240813_154804.jpg 20240813_154903.jpg 20240813_154854.jpg A MOPAR 56 PLYMOUTH RON DULIN (1).jpg A MOPAR 56 PLYMOUTH RON DULIN (2).jpg

  2. Sure, appropriate for a mild custom (seems like the "look" you're going for).

"Yes" as to the lake pipes, but only if you get the proper length.

Yes, these are the 70 inch ones and they make the 80 inch available, just trying to figure it
    out.

The look is definitely right with them. I've often described lake pipes as traditional ground effects, since they give the impression of the car being lower without actually lowering the car. I think the longer 80" pipes will also give a lengthening effect visually, which is a perfect combo. The long and low look is what you're after. Cool car

  10. Side pipes are for Corvette's unless your car powered by one of those extremely elusive Corvette engines? :D

I’m not sure. They look era correct but they don’t really add anything to the look at this point, just “accessorize” it. Maybe look at it again after you’ve added wheels and tires and set the stance.
Love the car (and the ‘56 in the pictures), definitely a great find.

I'm not a huge fan as too many of them look stuck on as an afterthought. Maybe because the ones I see in this area are on pretty much stone stock cars and not on mild customs like the Plymouth like you posted where they are a working part of the look. With the white walls and hub caps I'd think that car can carry it off and they won't look like the "I got 300 left in the budget what can I stick on it/" type of thing that you now see too much of.

  18. I was always partial to the short ones, go from the door back. either way would look good on that car. Here are the ones i made for my 39. 8B7A96D9-2994-42BF-B69B-69EB92EB02A3.jpeg 5924917B-9F58-467D-BB0A-D61485BED69F.jpeg 19A8558E-A05B-4456-8FA2-B2400C39AB66.jpeg

Well, I bit the bullet and ordered the 80 inch ones. We'll see how they look when I put them on and if I don't like them I can always take them off

Kind of funny that the longer ones are cheaper than the shorter ones.

Back when ( 1961 ) my school buddy's older btother had a '56 Plymouth fitted with the short version of lakes pipes.
    Worked for me.
I always felt that model and year deserved more attention than received.

i prefer what we used to call "sneaker pipes." they just stick out right behind the front wheels.

This is a crock of shit. Look at virtually every Barris built car, Larry Watson car, Alexander Bros. car from the era that had lake pipes. Virtually NONE of them had functional lake pipes, and they're all utilized for aesthetic purposes.

When people say stuff like "lake pipes must be functional" or "why are you adding on crap that doesn't work", what is actually being said is, "I don't understand custom cars and automotive restyling of the relevant era".

Here's a few shitboxes with untraditional, non-functional lake pipes.

Not on that car. It looks stubby as is, & those pipes would make it stubbier ... just drop it about 5'' both ends & put tailpipes on it ....

  26. This seems to be the case with about 80% of the comments made on this board about customs.

I wouldn't classify kickstands/cheater pipes as "lake pipes" in the typical sense. These are also more of a hot rod thing than a custom thing.

  28. I like them on the late '50s/early '60s styled mild customs.. I have them on my Fleetline (made 'em function 'cos I like the sound uncorked!). I think your Plymouth is a perfect candidate!
