It looks like the 8ba has possibilities. New rings for that bore are difficult to find ( my experience), but the decks have been cut as there is no sign of corrosion in the picture. I suggest checking the bores for rust damage and clean the sludge from everything. If you have a fiber timing gear, replace it.

    Gotta love electrolysis.
Here drums off the same rear, wire wheeled and Evaporate-rust soak on the right, 10hr 6 amp electo on the left:

It’s my first QC, and so will be a learning experience. Winters SR3620 Center section that @krylon32 set me up with on my minimal budget. I have to decide what year bells I want to go with yet. I felt a QC was a must-have and I’m looking forward to learning about them as I piece this together.

The 57 has been taking all the time and money recently. Not to mention the new seat upholstery for the 53 and a Fenton split exhaust found at the swap meet. But, I now have 100 amp to the shop (pending inspection) and so hopefully very soon a real welder, good psi etc. so that I can turn my attention back to the coupe ch***is. In the meantime a little surface rust removal. I need to strip the tulip panel too. So if anyone has suggestions on a stripper that works well and that won’t kill me let me know.

    Hi Bob! Long time.
Great suggestion. I think I have a couple of those from HF somewhere. I’ll give them a shot.

Yup, the little stripper disks work well. One disk stripped the full panel. Found a couple of small dings and a little pitting, but it’s an honest panel overall.

This came today. Cheapest repop on eBay, but looks the part until the day I can lay down cash for a real one.

Not much of and update. Things have been busy, and the shop pretty cold. I did buy some petals listed as 39. I don’t think they are. Oh well. I’ll see I can make them work when the time comes.

    Back to the quickchange.
I borrowed @brsturges ‘ Banjo Bell Build Base trick. I can see how this could make things easier. I made them stout enough to trip over later.

I took the bells down to the quickywash and degreased them again. I wrapped rags around a broom handle and scrubbed the insides as well as I could. Knocked out the seals before. Then oiled up everything to prevent any rusting. Now I’m selecting the best axles from my meager collection. Good day to be in the shop!

Still waiting on parts from the Early Ford Store. I’m old enough to remember mail order when you sent a check and wished for the best. But I guess I’ve been spoiled in the days of UPS tracking and next day delivery. Painful.

you are probably all over it, but if you lap those axles to the drum taper you will have a much better result. the key isn't supposed to keep drum from spinning, it's the fit of the taper. we get tapers of a similar size to 'break-a-way' on the press with 6-8 tonnes. makes getting the hub off a chore without a good puller but you won't break axle key's

Thanks! Yes planning to lap to the drums. Really just following brstures’ tech writeup:

Can you explain to me what exactly you mean by break-a-way? You’re using a press to set the hubs?

Got the axles cleaned up today. They aren’t perfect but the key ways are good, the threads are clean and I don’t see any major scars or pitting where the seal sit. Clearanced the DS bell.

Also, discovered that my wife is okay with a carrier in the freezer overnight and a bearing in the oven. She’s a keeper! :)

The freezer and oven method worked really well, the carrier bearing pretty much fell into place. I pressed in the race and checked the clearance, all good!

we tighten the hub to the axle with the nut to spec the push it apart with the press. it has a pressure gauge on it. we aim for 5+ tonnes to separate it. if no gauge then a good loud crack as it comes off the taper is a good sign.

    hope that makes sense

I get now! Thanks. I always fear something’s breaking when I hear the drums pop off :)
I still need to finish cleaning up the drums etc. I’ll have quite a bit into this little project after bearings, seals, and resurfacing the drums. Pretty fun though.

This afternoon I robbed Peter to pay Paul, putting my mock up in the floor to free up an engine stand. I don’t want to tell you how long it took me to figure out how to mount the center section to the stand. I’m a dumb***. I think I’ll make a custom mount for it at some point. Lots to do yet this weekend, but at least one item is off the list!
