I hate using the term, " kit car"; it seems to demote poorly built " wrecks" on VW subframes. Some were very well engineered and constructed. The original Manta Mirage a personal favorite, with it's combo of small block Chevy, Corvair and VW components. Post your favorites! MantaMirage2.jpg

Pure light weight, Lotus 7 and offspring.

Muscle and the backbone of the genre, Cobra offspring.

For rods, the granddaddy, the T Bucket.

EDIT: now with pictures. Note the 7 is an original knock down (kit), the 289 is a complete superformance kit without drivetrain, and the ad is HAMB era.

I would love to build a porsche spyder kit. I like that they are a vw based car that ctually stays true to its original styling. Also,My manx is one of my favorite cars that I own.

I've been drawn to the pre-war-classic styled kit cars, from the fairly believable to the blatantly horrible, for a number of different reasons over the years. Hence my thread, De-faking Kit Cars.

I believe this is a Factory Five Cobra that was at a monthly cruise in here. Very sharp.

I prefer the better looking Porsche kit [and donor cars are easier to find]

    Here's the kit
    [IMG]

    The BEFORE a lowly 924 "S"

The AFTER a badass 924 Carrera GT

My Cobra at car show.jpg Here's my "KitCar". It's a Contemporary Cobra. It's got a full Jaguar E Type front and rear suspension under it, including IRS. It's got many suspension mods on it. It weighs about 2200 lb wet, with a TKO600 ,82 overdrive 5 speed transmission. For power it's got a 520 cu. in. Ford FE sideoiler with 744 HP. It's got some zip to it. People ask all the time "Is it real?" My answer is always "No, it's way to fast to be a "real" one."

I could have got one of those in the late 80's for 2500 bucks it had a 289 hipo and 4 SPD but it did not accommodate someone 6'-2" .now I've shrunk to 6' it may have but we'll never find another for 2500 bucks !

  25. I love the 356 Porsche speedsters but my old Neanderthal body wasn't designed to fit in the tight confines.

If I was going to buy a kit car I think the 1955 Mercedes Gullwing would be at the top of my list.
at 225,000 it ain't cheap but it is a thing of beauty! HRP

  30. Here is my Factory Five Roadster in Victory Lane at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The man I sold it to won 1st place in his class at Auto Fair. That is Humpy Wheeler giving him the award.
