There's a possibility that I may take posession of a one owner (my wifes grandmothers) Fairlane 500. Refrig. White with blue int. 289/2bbl/Ford-o-Matic. I know there's some love around here for the 65's. I know what your thinking" Not another Poser g***er!". Well, yeah, kinda. It's that or bag it and personally I prefer fast to slow. I'm trying to come up with a rough list of parts that would look right. I'll reuse the 289. Since there doesn't seem to be any multicarb manifolds I'll probably go with 2x4's. Swap out the auto with a 4 spd. and straight axle it. Maybe some fenderwell headers. I'm trying to think of a wheel/tire combo. Other than steelies or chromies, what would have been right for the time? Were Crager SS's out by 65? Not my first choice but affordable. Blackwall Hurst cheaters? Any suggestions? Be nice, now.
A friend of my brother had one back in the 60's, so that is one of my favorite Ford body styles. He ran Torque Thrusts, or copies of them, on his. That's the way i aways picture those Fairlanes now. I think Maybe T.Q.s, on the front and black open wheels on the back......with slicks!
Yeah, I was just looking at the Hurst stuff. Some skinny shinies up front with the Hurst fronts and 8.5 piecrusts on widened black stockers sounds good.
http://www.roadsters.com/wheels/... Lots of traditional wheel ideas there... Drilled I-beam,Tilt front, and a screaming 289...that sounds good to me
Katuna, Do a search here for 65 Fairlanes. Look at Turbo442 posts. In there you will see some pics of two factory 65 fairlane racecars. I like Darrell Drokes 65 Thunderbolt. It has Cragers on her and that car was new when she got them. Go to Crites Restoration site for all your needs ( Fibergalss etc ) I have been trying for some time to get a pic of the 65 Light Blue Fairlane g***er in the Phoenix area. NO luck so far..Kid
Machobuck-Cool website. 6t5-Yeah, I'd searched here and seen 442's post. Those are sweet. As far as Crites, I'd love gl*** but I have champagne taste on a tap water budget. I was just looking at some posts on the front axle. I thought I remembered something about the Econoline axles. Lots of *****in' ideas in my head for a car I don't know if I'm even going to end up with!
There was another guy with a 65 that was putting in a straight axle. Ithink he went by georgipoo, had a red 65 Lane with pics but I have not seen him on here in awhile. Do a search and see....Remember that all the factory Experimental cars at least in B/FX in 65 had factory front suspensions ( but f'd with for sure ) and not straight axles
there are multi carb intakes out there. Holman-Moody is producing one. Probably pricey, though. http://www.holmanmoody.com/parts1.html its midway down... right under the pictures of the intakes in a row... look for 3 2V listing. No prices though.
Econoline axle will work, but is a little too wide for the early Fairlanes. The center of the spring pads on a econo axle is around 36", and the center of the front frame rails on 62 -65 Fairlane is 31". The front spring mounts will need to be mounted on the outer sides of the frame rail. With some modifiactions to the axle they can fit just right. I am using a Econoline axle under my 64 Fairlane. http://members.shaw.ca/blueoval/64fairlane.htm
At the CHRR the blue G***er 65 was there. I can e mail you the pic if you like. It was E mailed to me....
The brakes are from 65-66 Mustang. (rotors, dust shields, calipers and caliper brackets) Spindles will need to be machined (diameter stays the same, just the length of spindle gets machined down), and caliper brackets re-drilled to econo spindle bolt pattern. There is another kit available that is suppose to be a bolt on kit. Check it out at http://www.dddiscbrakes.com/index.html.
John1964, I really like those valve covers. I've see the ones that have cobra cast into them for the Cobra kit cars, but the plain pent roof finned ones look good. Who makes em? Got a link?
My $.02: You'll have fun with this one. Keep the 289 nice high revver, stick shift, 9 inch with loooong ladders on floaters, Torque thrust front and chromed reversed rear, straight oval slotted beam axle and tear drop on the hood, use the inner headlight holes for the air tubes to the carb bonnet. Digging those fenderwell headers! How about some fogging and a little lace paint on the tear drop and sail panels? I remember a 65 Mustang fastback street racer done in baby blue on white that way back in about '67-'68. had 3 dueces on it and would RPM around 7 grand on the launch. I was 6 years old. Labor is cheap use your hands more than your wallet (tap water budget!!!!) Dave
