Faux/Fake valve covers

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by foolthrottle, Aug 18, 2024.

  1. It's kind of funny that some guys will pull the fake BS, then belittle the guy building/driving a glass bodied car!!

I believe a guy has the right to do anything he wants to do to his car. Your opinion of what he does doesn't really matter. If fake valve covers and a fake blower are what he wants, and you don't like it, its your problem not his.

My coupe is a fake dirt track race car. I really don't care if you don't like the idea that its fake or not. In its original form, it was pretty hard to tell if it was real or not. The roll cage was pulled out after I banged my head on it one time too many. The first car show I attended with it was at a dirt track, and if you preregistered, you could make laps on the track. I took a few laps as hard as I wanted to push the old motor. After that, when anyone asked me, I told them I pulled the cage out of it after I banged my head on it, and it has been run hard on a dirt track before, both true. They could decide if they thought it was real or not. At this point, we have put 100,000 miles on the old coupe, fake or not, its been fun.

I just don't get where you guys think you have the right to complain about someone else's car. Grow up.

Clever! In my early days of the Motorcycle scene, an expression that was used in describing the bravado
or "abilities", determination, Character, etc. of an individual, was " He ain't got the parts"

  6. A Facebook friend had these and thought they were the cat's ass and I agree I've never seen this done before or know exactly how it was done.

    Screenshot_20240824_112026_Gallery.jpg

I explained to him it was just a stamped steel big block valve cover flipped upside down, somehow attached to the sbc valve cover then another big block cover bolted on top.

A good way to run those cool Wei-and covers without spending BBC big buck$. Although the ARP fasteners, Intake, and aluminum heads belie that big bucks have been spent internally.

Yes, they do. I think there are several ways to look at it though. There can be lots of reasons why they chose to make it that way. Sometimes its a lack of money. Sometimes its because they don't have enough knowledge/experience and think they have done it right for the look they want. Sometimes its because that's exactly what THEY WANT, and don't give a sh** whether others like it or not. Not that it matters to anyone else, but I think what I see is many people striving to be cool by impressing others.....but not realizing they look totally uncool when it becomes obvious they either don't know what they are talking about, or they have tried to misrepresent something and it's obvious.

In a way you are right, but then why did the individual try to misrepresent something.......such as trying to make an LS motor look like a smallblock........or make a different year smallblock look like an older version? Obviously he knows it's not authentic.....so whose opinion is he trying to make favorable with the misrepresentation? Again, let me say that I agree with what you are saying, a person should build their car to "look" like what they want personally. If certain parts are made of "unobtainium" or are " rediculously unaffordable" , it can be difficult to make a car really look "period correct". I think (o_O) though, that someone who builds a car that tends to resemble a certain period or era doesn't have to (shouldn't have to) worry about people discovering their misrepresentation....because it's obvious that they just built it to resemble cars of a certain style/period, and aren't trying to fool anyone. (That's what I strive for) My 32 will be built to resemble a certain style/period, but there will be openly viewable exceptions.........and some other things that may be more difficult to recognize. @19Eddy30 posted a picture above thats very similar to some ideas I have considered.

On my 32 I plan to incorporate 365 Cad square end valve covers on the 500 engine. Someone will have to look closely to notice the adaption (I hope). Beyond that, is the blower situation. I have a brand new BDS 8:71 sitting on a shelf next to a used GMC 6:71 that needs some work. I want to run a hidden multi-point EFI......but I have to have fuel flowing thru the rotors to cool them. I also need to run Premium fuel with that set up.
If I make the GMC a dummy, I can run slightly higher compression and use regular fuel. Quite a difference in build costs and operating costs......yet I still have plenty of power (expected 500 hp naturally aspirated) for a lightweight street car with a 6 speed manual transmission. Do I need the extra hp the blower will provide? Do I care if some sharp eyed knowledgeable car guy sees thru my ruse? Not really, because he can also see that a lot of ingenuity and self engineering went into getting to that point. Big difference between that and just bolting an aftermarket valve cover on to disguise the engine.

I think what you have done is basically the same thing I may do. However I do it, it will have no carburetors....so there will be a telltale that its not perfectly authentic which ever way I proceed.

Some people are complainers, but I think part of the idea is how someone goes about their build. Personally I don't care what anyone else thinks, because I'm building it to suit me and maybe provide some ideas that others may like.
The people who thrive on impressing others with their ability to point out deviations from "back in the day" will probably have no problem finding those details on my 32 (independent front suspension should be their first clue) and they will move on. Others (if any)that have an interest in how I built it are welcome to stop and talk.:)

So I suppose my staggered hole Cal Custom valve covers will be considered fake when I put them on the 60's SBC I'm putting together now, with adaptors.

    Just a heads Up !
Im thinking you are using a center bolt head,
If so , The adapters I used was bigger on inside , witch made a ledge that oil would lay On top & Leak ,
I tried Glueing gasket to Valve cover ,
    Cork, Rubber ,
    Leaked .
    So started thinking ,
To solve the Issue /Problem was to Ball mill a Chanel / Grove down each side Front & Back & across Bottom , then on bottom drill holes about every
1/2 inch letting Oil drain into head from Channel/Groove

For all you haters out there, are the covers on Isky's roadster making him a poser?

Look at the TCI/Pete & Jakes independent. Less expensive than Heidts and comes standard with a sway bar and eccentrics to adjust alignment. Heidts has $300 option swaybar, no eccentrics, and shipping was about $300 higher.

Will people be able to tell that the block you are using is a later model or that the heads you are using are not really staggered hole heads? Will you have a breather at the front of the engine? Will the car that the engine is going in look as racey as your avataur ? If so, someone would probably wonder why you would use an old and low performance heads in a high performance car. Are you doing it to fool/impress others, or because you just really like the looks of that style of valve cover?

My point here is simply that there will be different people who view your build differently, some may consider you a poser..........and some may not......and some won't know you even did it. I'm putting different valve covers on my engine, and I don't care who thinks what about it. Come on over to the other side and enjoy rodding without all the hassles. :D

It' a 60's engine that I'll either be using Power Pack or Double Hump heads on. I have ran these adapters on Power Pack heads before.

I don't see a problem with using same make valve covers on the same make engine. Where I have an issue is like putting Olds Rocket valve covers on a SBC or Ford engine. Or any other combination of different make covers on a different make engine. Just saying be proud of what brand of engine you have, don't disguise it. The only people you fool are the young people who didn't grow up with this stuff and non car guys. OK now tear me a new one. :D

  18. What is that a Jag? We were talking about clones and fakes and then this picture pops up. Is this a fake? If so it looks cool and you got my approval.

Isky roadster heads are aftermarket truck heads and the covers are for exhaust rockers only, someone on here knows more

  21. Once again opinions vary. :) In hot rodding cosmetics are up to the builder. I read recently some where the following about fake breasts: makes no difference what's inside, the outside is real. LOL.

Here is one I took a picture of at a local car show this summer.
    upload_2024-8-26_10-44-0.jpeg
It's not my glass o' bourbon but I try not to judge. I was on-line on FB the other night and there were pictures of very pretty girls that kept popping up, my wife would say "those are fake", "those aren't real", "that's photoshopped"... Meanwhile all I was thinking was "schwing!" :)
    upload_2024-8-26_10-51-28.jpeg
Meanwhile my wife and I attend car shows and she wouldn't know a fake blower or fuel injection from the real thing, or fake valve covers, or fake QC...I just keep my mouth shut and let her enjoy what she is looking at. I wish she would do the same when I am ogling the pretty girls.

I'm thinkin' EVH himself with David Lee Roth on vocals. I've seen Iron Maiden and their pal Eddie in concert twice, VH once but as Van Hagar at the Monster's of Rock 1988 in Spokane.

Some of us Oldsmobile guys are mildly amused by this chicanery. The SBC can easily be built to produce tons more power than our 'Rockets' and yet OUR engines are the objects of emulation. The first I saw of this were the early Olds/ SBC versions.
As BJR pointed out, the only ones fooled are the unwashed and the younger crowd. As one of whom,
with what appeared to be a valve seat inserted in his ear lobe, proclaimed to his girlfriend at a car show, " Those Offenhauser V-8s are a super rare engine"
Imitation, whether poorly, or extremely well done , is the sincerest form of flattery.

My Pent Roof Valve covers on my Ford small block. They didn't pop like on an FE block. I think it was cause of the small engine space compared to a Big block engine compartment. So now they are wall art. 65 mustang.JPG

The car shows and cruise ins I attend could give 2 shites about what anyone thinks about their vehicles

They build what pleases them, the jerks eventually leave as everyone gets to know them and shun them

Our car shows allows Asian cars, raised 4 wheel drive, rat rods and such

Build what ya want ( safe of course ) .. I see stuff that is odd to me as I am almost 70
But they are built by 20 or 30 year olds who see things in the now, I ask them questions as to why this or that..... They react positive and I make a Friend .... There are some insanely smart Folks out there

Some of the builds are way off topic, if you would take the time to look at the skill of these young Folks you would be amazed..... I compliment them and have learned from them as well

Most are eager and appreciate old Folks complimenting them on their craftmanship

They are the future when we all croak..... mentor them or lift them up
