rebuilding after the crash

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by racer-x, Sep 19, 2015.

  1. I just mounted the data logger last night. It's not hooked up yet. Hopefully soon.
I share the good and bad here. With that being said I wasn't happy with the performance. It was slow by a half second and the 60 were off a tenth. Something is a miss.
We found the problem while cackling the car at the show yesterday. When the blower went back on the fuel returns somehow got reversed. That explains the lazy leave because it was lean. It also explains the flames we couldn't get rid of with adjustments to the barrel valve. The mph was down because it wasn't leaning out on the big end.
The fittings have been engraved so this won't happen again regardless of how tired I am or in a hurry thrashing. Live and learn. You want to find something wrong yet you don't. It's a easy fix just swap line positions and it costs nothing.
Next stop is union grove on labor day. I have a match race against a front engine dragster. Could this be the day we go 200?

Glad you figured it out and good luck on the quest for 200. Your posts have been very helpful even though I never plan to run at the level your car is, I have learned a lot reading your posts and explanations on why you do some of the things you do. As a result, I am now searching the local area for someone that is both experienced and good with a blower to make sure my Mooneyham 871 is right and will live on the street. A lot of people say they can work on them, but when you ask about their experience with them and get told it's just mechanics and they are very capable, I don't want to be their learning curve.

Thanks. That's not that far from me and I'm somewhat familiar with the city. Not looking promising though, no returns on searching for them on google. The name shows up but no web pages, links or even store hours. I'll call someone from that area and have them drive by.

Rudy works out of his house, he doesn't have a store front.

  9. Jerry Newman feels the car is ready for a serious tune up. He wants 200 mph also. With the chassis working the way it should and the engine not hurting itself it's time. So the question to ask is just what are you going to do to make it happen? Jerry has very detailed notes of every pass covering 50 plus years. From the dragsters; funny cars; fuel altereds and more he has notes. These notes provide the tune ups that go into the car. The combination put into the car this past spring came from his notes. The size of the engine. The size of the pump. The size of the blower. The area of the combined nozzles comes into play. Mine was figured on running 85-90 percent with 30 over on the blower. We have been sneeking up on this combo. Jerry kept saying baby steps be patient. He is happy with things so the last piece of the combo has been added. That being the blower. He wants the over drive to go from 18 over to 30 over. This is a BIG swing as far as a tune up goes. So the pulley was ordered to make it happen. I have full confidence in the direction Jerry is steering me in. When you tune a car at this level there are several ways to do it. You can't tune it by committee. There needs to one voice. Listening to a few guys picking out what sounds good at the time rarely works out. To expand my knowledge I ask alot of questions. Lucky for me Jerry is a patient teacher. One day these guys with decades of experience will be gone taking all they have learned with them. I have a good group of older veterans passing along alot of hard to get info. They rarely freely share this stuff.

Congrats on the coverage Brian but now I see it’s time for the party pulley my question is what kind of boost are you currently at and what is the projected boost with the party pulley I am curious to know I follow along closely and learn from everything you have done and someday I will be doin this too I did buy a billet bae Hemi block crank and a pair of heads recently still have lots of parts to collect but I’m getting there

  11. Congratulations on the hemi purchase. Bae blocks use only Bae parts. Like the gear drive. Oil pan etc. 50 or 60 mm cam? Std deck or short? 1 inch or 1 1/16 lifters? High quality from Bae.
I was running 20lbs of boost. This should bring it up to 30-35lbs. That's all that is needed. If it was alcohol then 55lbs. The nitro has it own o2 in the fuel so it doesn't need the extra boost.

  12. Don't get confused by blower pressure vs blower volume.
A example. Sbc stock heads and valves mild cam old blower intake. Makes 20 lbs of boost.
Now put the same blower on a 500 inch hemi engine with big valves in billet heads. The manifold is a modern big port design. The cam is a modern roller. The boost is 2lbs.
    What happened?
The second with small ports backed up the air increasing pressure. There was no volume.
The big port hemi flowed air much better so the pressure was way down.
The volume and pressure need to be both present. Getting 30 lbs on a modern billet headed hemi requires a good blower. With the big volume of air under good pressure makes a nitro engine get all kinds of crazy happy. I hope this helps in explaining things. You have to look at the entire picture.

I definitely understand boost and volume I know what your blower is and that definitely helps me see the big picture I have the boost and volume argument all the time with the turbo guys at the shop next door they just don’t understand it but then again they are LS guys and don’t know what a real engine is lol. Thanks for the info I’m gonna go back to work so I can afford some more big boy engine parts lol

  14. Jerry has mentioned patience being a valuable trait and having had to slow people down from making silly, stupid mistakes. Slow and steady wins the nitro race, fast and silly gets stupid expensive fast. The mindset that is.

  15. Well Jerry tuned it up. We added more spring pressure to the idle valve. It went from 20 up to 40lbs. This gives the engine more fuel at the hit. A few idle nozzles were changed to richen up a few cylinders. It sounded so crisp.
The first pass it had 85 percent nitro.
45 degrees of lead no grid
Left from a idle no trans brake
    Huge burnout
Blew the tires off big time. Felt so strong going down the track. Huge power gain.
Second pass removed 5 degrees of lead. Everything else was the same.
Including blowing the tires off. So I will be calling my chassis expert for a bar change. I can see how this is going to go. More power then chassis adjustments back and forth until it's right. Next stop nitro chaos central illinois dragway. Havanna illinois.

  16. Looks like it's back to leaving in second gear. 156 down to 125 ratio. With all of the new power it can pull it.

  17. If you do Facebook, the backup gal for the Panty Dropper in the other lane has a really good Facebook page, Drag Strip Blondie.

Very cool, I learn something every time I tune in. Hopefully it makes 200 soon!

  19. The chassis expert says nothing can be done. The power needs to be controlled by the timing grid. I will pull timing at the hit and add it back in around 400 feet. Havanna is known for it being slippery. I can also drop the nitro to change the tune.

  20. Sounds like you will be tuning to the track conditions and let the suspension set up do its thing. Go for it Brian, and as always good luck, and fast times.:)

  21. Looks like beautiful videos,,,,,I can’t watch them because they are Facebook .
It will play about a half second of video and shut off !
Oh well,,,,they look like fun .

  22. That's strange. With my old phone I can watch them here. Not much to see just spinning the tires. I did split the match. He red lighted on the second pass.

  23. I will try this setup on the first qualifier. At the release of the button the timer starts. The timing is pulled to 33 degrees and held for a moment. It gradually ramps back in. I will try this using all three speeds. If the car hooks I can shorten how long it's pulling the timing. It is infinitely adjustable.
Looking at the graph you can see timing that's negative and seconds. It get full timing to hit the tires. The timing comes out to make it past 330 feet. As the car is really moving it gets the full 45 degrees.
In the old days guys would pull a cable at half track to advance the mag. It's done electronically now. Same idea. 20240907_155110.jpg 20240907_155104.jpg

For clarity, 0 = 45 degrees advance and -13 is 33. So your base line is 45, right? I made the switch to digital timing on my Hemi, but it's not so sophisticated. It's a huge advantage to be able to plug in whatever it wants at any time/RPM. Pretty tough to do all this with springs and weights! Thx, Brian.

  25. You got it. My timing has a straight curve. Now let's say there is a bump or slick spot on the track at 400 feet. The drive shaft sensor will record the spin. The grid can then pull timing at that spot in the run to get past it. The timing can be pulled by rpm or shifts. I use it at the launch. This is how the cars have gotten so fast.this is the traction control guys talk about.

Man, this stuff is absolutely fascinating. Personally, I'll never in hell use any of this knowledge you're sharing here but I sure appreciate the fact that you take the time to do it. Hands down one of the best threads on the HAMB.

The hand cable Avc/Retard is interesting , Do you know if there was springs hooked to base so you pulled against the springs, , when lever was released it went back to the original timing? Vice verse..

This electronics , & data logging is end list,
    @ the track I am @ the most ,
Recently there was a car seen on tv,
One that in middle fast to slow ,
    Private test ,
    With Timing sensors
    Ride height sensors
    Track temp sensors
    Ext ,
Engine was set on timer to only
    Run /pull for 3 sec & shut down , 3:83 in 1/8

Out Law track Maybe Not considered that nowadays but very narrow and very well prepped, The one that preps been doing for 50yrs,
Bunny's A/Fc held record for many yrs
4:20ish , Prep as of now down with old style dragging,
A Rotating drag tractor has been order ,
Track is preparing for low 4 s & quicker.
