I’m running a Holley 1442 500cfm on a sbc 305 . A few days ago I fixed a fuel leak after the filter on a rubber fuel line where it attaches to the metal line. After that now I have this problem. The carb won’t idle for **** ( 1/2 ) the cylinders and only shoots gas on the right side . When I step on it all is fine and goes down the road at 55 no problem but when I come to a stop same problem. I’ve blown out the metering block but no fix . Suggestions please.
There are a lot of p***ages in the main body and the nozzle squirter has 2. You need to blow ALL of them…those computer keyboard cans of air with a nozzle work great…
Did you replace the rubber line? ***uming you are using ethanol gas, the rubber line probably started leaking due to degradation of the rubber. Messing with the line sent rubber "sand" into the carb. A p***age in the carb is plugged somewhere.
Take the shooter/squirter nozzle off and depress the accelerator pump gently. There is a jet in that hole that often gets stuck or lodged. If the nozzle is only shooting fuel on one side it’s clogged. There is a gasket above where the Phillips screw is ( paper thin ) and a flat gasket under it where it sits on the main body. Don’t lose them. The squirter nozzle its self has many different sizes. It will be stamped in it. If it is only squirting on one side the other side is clogged. I have had to use my pin vise and the tiny drill bits that match the opening to clean them out. A torch tip cleaner can be used but remember to use a smaller than needed. Carb cleaner and air pressure is your friend. There are many manuals on line /videos that address rebuilds. Also welcome to the new gas formula etc. I often have to dislodge this very jet under the nozzles after a carb sits only a few months. I have gotten to where I will use marvel mystery oil on/in them if they are going to sit. Same as my fuel injection units.
And if that jet is really stuck don’t be surprised if you don’t have to use a fair amount of air pressure. And remember to put your hand /finger over that hole or you will never find that jet. It’s slightly smaller than the main jet in the main needle and seat.
The hose clamp broke so I just replaced that but I do think I dislodged a piece of rubber that is causing the problem.
Update, I’ve been driving the hell out of the car , my wife insists while the weather is good we go driving so I’ve put a few hundred miles on over the past 4 days. Today on the way to the grocery store the carb sounded like it sneezed and now the car runs like it has for years . The only thing I can think of is that if finally worked its way through.
