as soon as they see P/U it is considered commercial, period. No way to just get car plates.

    quick update:
Did the research and went down to AAA to make sure I was correct with things.
Yes Vin verification is required do to out of state; (even with a signed title)
Yes a weight cert is required - period. ( per 3 different DMV specialists)
BUT I was able to start the process, paid the title fees and sales tax and now have paperwork stating it is mine.
That is all I wanted for now anyway. They said I can take as long as I want to complete things from there.
so it's tear down time :)
thanks for all the input. Rich

Ya, I wasn’t sure if you still could or not. It was a long time ago.

Glad to hear you got it sorted and are moving forward.
In jest, I'd suggest tearing it down until it's under the fenderless weight then weighing it, but that opens a whole other can of worms.

Mot exactly the same but I have YOM plates on my '39. The number sequence is actually for passenger cars but I pay the weight fee so no issues. Although some say you need the correct year actual commercial plates for a truck in order to get YOM plates. Maybe I lucked out but then this is the third truck I've had YOM plates on and none of them were actual commercial plates. It seems like the DMV didn't care as long as they collected the appropriate weight fees.

I put yom plates on my 55 Stude president 30 years ago. They were a truck number sequence. I got pulled over by a Police officer and grilled on it, showed him the reg and the vin on the car. He hemmed hawed and threatened but didn't write a ticket.

I wouldn't get to comfortable. Get the process completed now , Title in Hand. My experience, 30 years and over 100 cars, the fees start right now. Sure, you have all the time in the world, but the fees keep adding up, or the will asess the finished value of your truck, not what you paid for it. Hard to convince them you paid 50 bucks, or 500 bucks for a running driving classic .

In CA, if it is the start of a long term project, consider "Non- Operational Vehicle" status : there will be no fees due until the vehicle is ready to go back on the road, then only the then current year's fees will be due. During the non-op time, even if running, the vehicle isn't supposed to be operated on the road.

A little off topic, but when I tried to register my 54 Plymouth with the old plate letter-number along with the last registration slip, the DMV wouldn't take it. The registration was one letter off from the plate. So I went to my neighborhood registration "store", told them my problem, paid $90 in advance. A week later they told me, sorry, can't do it, see ya.
