I’m over it.. tried 2 Distributors. Clean hot power to battery clean direct ground ? No spark useing the suggested wires and coil!!!… coil gets hot that’s about it. Anyone get around this problem ? New motor in a new build car 30 ford coup. I’ve isolated all my wiring from the system and ran direct to eliminate problem wiring.
Motors a 48 Flathead Stromberg E-fire with there plug wires and coil. No points! I’ve wired it stand alone hot and ground to see if spark would appear. Zero. Not even with my ignition wiring. Change out distributor twice coil twice. Zero spark. I’ve just been introduced to the nightmare of posts ? gets me there still selling these units as plug and play???B.S. I’m getting a third unit on Tuesday to try one last time. I’m stumped.
A properly setup distributor with “quality” points and condenser along with coil and resistor (if needed) is the only advice I have.
I've read about the E-Fire having grounding issues because of the anodized body. People have cleaned under the screws for the body and plate and then run a ground to the body or direct to plate and it solved their problems. That and the 6V model is voltage sensitive and wants 6.5V to run reliably. I see that yours is a 12V unit but you still might want to check your voltage. Good hunting!
Seems I’m a gluten for punishment… today changed out distributor back to first one before third shows Tuesday. Added base ground + grounded plate inside. Checked power and grounds. Did bench unit and got it to strobe with hot stick while turning cam key on back. Checked #1 plug wire then pulled coil wire out of distributor turned it over no spark there either. No spark at plugs. There’s really no more I see to do. I’ve dis***embled a car to chase this down. I’ve read all the post and what amazes me is not one comment from stromberg. Nor any comments from folks that’s had a good run with one! Just a ****ty deal. And if I had known I had to call overseas I’d would had gone with a deferent system. On this particular build I’ll always have to dis***emble the whole front of car to get to distributor. Needs to be spot on. Thanks for the responses.
The guy that runs Stromberg from the UK is really good about responding to emails. I had issues with mine and I asked him questions, he responded quickly, walked me through it and I got it working very well. You might want to email him.
Yes Sir. Did that Sunday. He reached out today. I’ll go forward with an open mind. These are really so simple. Seems I’ve done all I can come up with. Thank you.
Please let us know whatever you find out in the end. It's very helpful for other people doing internet searches for troubleshooting. I'd be very curious to know what your issue is.
Ok here’s the Low/Down all the thinking and corrections were unnecessary to say the least! But redo’s get things tight. My problem was grounding the neg side of coil !!! Only wire form car system is a clean positive to pos on coil. Then pos & neg ( red & blk) from distributor to coil pos & neg spots. Then I landed tac gr to neg post on coil. Turned key it fired the new motor first turn. And in useing a stock 1.5 ohm EBC1414 carquest coil. Need pitman arm to run it down the road. That was my problem grounding to many things. No grounds at distributor nether. I’ll chime back in after tarmac run. Later
Excellent followup. I bet some future internet-searching toubleshooter will come across this and figure out what they had wrong, and won't have to go through all the h***les you did. If you're from the future and you found this and it solved your issue, be sure to leave a comment below!
Your correct directions are simple and Vague. Distributor so far is really firing well. Just need a real run down the road. To give my honest opinion. Many Rod shops rave there simplicity of out of the box and down the road. Will see. Happy Rodding.
