In 2001, I installed a T-5 in my CCPU using the Auto Restoration kit. Bought a new touring engine from Bert's with a V8 clutch. ordered a new throwout bearing something didn't look right. To make a long story short, the original kit came with a disk that protruded out an inch or so from the clutch housing. I was able to find the machined snout that extended the T-5 output shaft so that I could use a Model A clutch disc and throw out assembly. A lot of extra work and cost to fix something that could have been done by the original manufacturer so that original A parts could be used.

 

Checking in with a new project. Thirtys style three spring modified. Chevy frame, dodge axle, A engine and 26 T touring front half.

 

Anyone recasting Winfield heads?

 

Haven't done anything but drive the model T...
It maybe time for an oil change...what's a good oil for a 32' banger??
Also need front tires...what's an affordable brand for a 30" wheel?
The "non-skid" are very expensive..

Checking in. Got the exhaust on the car which fixed a lot of the popping issues. Just switched the carbs to "Winter" hopefully that fixes the hesitation. Got 4 events on the calander for the month after missing almost the whole Summer. Too many other things going on to focus on the engine swap.

 

This tyre blew out at 60mph on the freeway about 10 days ago.

A friend rescued me.

Can't repair that tube.

Upon inspecting the tyre, this was discovered.


Tall 18" tyres are non-existent in Australia, so it looks like it's time for 16" Kelsey Hayes wires and big and littles. Not what I was wanting to do, rather I'm having to do it.

Oh well, that's hot rodding

The weekend after going to Rømø, I set off to Bicester Heritage for the VHRA Throttle Auto Races. Much nearer - just 120 miles or so each way. A one day short track event, with five cars at a time on the 1km kidney bean shaped track at once. Drove there, raced, drove home, no real dramas.

Need to sort out my sump baffles though, as oil surge on the right handers dropped the pressure to zero.

As for oil...I've been using the old formulation of Rotella T 15-30 but my drum is empty
I am going to try the Walmart synthetic based on the test results that Lake Speed Jr did recently
I suspect I'll get feedback on that statement

For the hive mind, I've seen what looks to be a Ambler "Clutch Can". Unfortunately its the bare housing. Have any of you guys played around with them?

Paul Shinn says any synthetic 10w-30 is good to go for the A bangers. I can't imagine '32 is significantly different. If you have a real hot cam or high-tension cam springs you might want to add ZDDP, I guess.

Checking in, decided to start the month off with a test cast of a B fuel pump block off.
Getting the correct PPE is definitely at the top of my list, that and more sand!

I went into the pour with low expectations, and was surprised with the quality.

Things were going well at the end of August. I drove the pickup about 500 miles or so, including a 150 mile round trip to the Cheatersma Car Show. Was putting a few miles on it over the Labor Day weekend and lost the head gasket. Unfortunately it got pretty hot before it became apparent. Fingers crossed it didn’t incur any damage.
Anyways I pulled the head, found a gasket I find questionable and the steam holes not blocked. Got them plugged and will hopefully get the head back on tomorrow night. I’ll start it up see what I got.
I hope everyone in banger land here is doing well.

 

Destroyed 1st gear at the Estranged drags. Can we get it rebuilt and back together for RPM nationals???

Looks like a planned engine build is getting closer. A bunch of parts have arrived to start the month off including a GEM 7:1 head, Brierlry 1R Cam, Burns Dual Intake and a pair of Stromberg 81’s.

 

Be sure to fit a head gasket to that head before installing it. It looks to me like the flycuts are not symmetrical adjacent to the head bolt holes so a Model B gasket may overlap into the combustion chamber in those areas. The A head gasket is narrower in that location. If the fit is poor with an A gasket you can install the gasket with the crimp down against the block so only solid copper is exposed at the edge of the combustion chamber (assuming a copper sandwich head gasket). I have a reproduction Winfield head that suffers from somewhat inaccurate casting of the combustion chambers and this approach has worked for me to avoid damage to the crimped part of the gasket from combustion heat.

 

I see what you are seeing. The supplied head gasket(Best 509) appears okay to me. Unfortunately this head is going to be used on a new build which is quite a few months out. I don’t know of any machine shops nearby that can or will machine for insert bearings or drill cranks for full pressure oiling. Although I know of a good flathead shop.
I’m new to diving into these Banger equipped Early Fords but I’m hooked. I’m learning by doing and I have a long way to go. Any help, comments etc are greatly appreciated. I plan on playing with high performance bangers until I’m no longer able. I’m quite interested in them.

 

Thanks for showing the photo with the gasket. The GEM head is new to me; any details you can share about it?

 

It’s made by Belcher Engineering in the UK. I’m not quite sure where I first saw one but I thought it looked cool and the engine it was on seemed to run well. So I bought one. My plan is to run the Dual 81 Strombergs with the Brierley 1R regrind.

As much as I wanted to go with a Miller/Seer head It’s just not in my budget plus I think a flathead will provide me with what I’m looking for. I fully intend on using my Model B as a daily driver. I’m thinking I should start a build thread on making my B a daily driver. It’s been a bit challenging,

 

I took the A for a blast today, on some local dirt roads, caught up to a 'modern' that was scared of some dust & pot holes
Was a really nice way to finish the weekend.

Went to visit a local mate who got a Tub in the shed

Aside from sorting the wiring, I need to build up the passenger side latch to stop the door opening & kids falling out , fix the gearbox to stop it jumping out of gear, & it will be much nicer to drive.
Then soften the springs/shocks, windscreen, seat, bigger rear tyres etc etc

 

I have never met a Model A whose doors don't fly open, especially a RPU. Very little structure in the RPU. I have installed these on every Model A and it is so easy and solves the problem, especially with young passengers.

& Just for a bump,
I had the local hot rod club visit for a shed crawl on the wk end, I had a clean up & mocked this up so there was something to look at. It'll be a while off, but it will be be banger powered

Of course, you could fix the doors and hope that they're thrown clear.
