Hot Rods '63 Rambler Classic 550

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Greenblade, Oct 10, 2020.

  1. I had an OT '68 Mustang with no speedometer, just a tach. I had someone with a good speedometer drive next to me, beep the horn at 40, 50, 60 and 70. I jotted down the RPM and later wrote the values on tape and stuck them onto the tach face.

Greenblade, what rear shocks did you end up using on your Rambler? I saw that the bottom mounts were fabricated on to the trailing arms, but did you use stock Rambler shocks or go with something different?

Anybody in the black hills SD area have a 700r4 to sell? After installing the new gearset I haven't driven the Rambler much due to high rpm.

I'm in the process of installing my rebuilt T-35 BW on my '63 Classic. What is the best way to remove the melted rubber trunnion from the "collar" flange? I've tried rubbing alcohol, heat gun, scrapers, and wire wheel brush. Taking forever to get it off.

The original is vulcanized to the metal. It's just a PITA to remove. I've used a sharp wood chisel and a mallet... It was a quality piece when new for sure!

Thanks - I ended up taking a wire wheel to it over several nights. Got it fully cleaned off and ready for the replacement. It's been installed for a month now, no issues.

Will you be rebuilding the 700R4 or running it as is?

  12. I knew of a few shops that would do carry-in work for me. Now I'm down to one that might still do that. For a little extra, one place had exchange units ready to go.

I just had the 700R4 in my 82 Vette rebuilt, cost me $1500. He pulled it out of the car, built it and used a new torque converter, then replaced it in car. When I had my Ford AOD built by the same guy, I carried it in and picked it up, it was only $1000. I figured it was worth the extra $500 on the Vette since I didn’t have to do anything.
