Sid has discontinued production of the bop top. As of this weekend he only had three left but now he only has one, I sent him a message to buy the last black 2-in chop one that he had, but somebody bought it this morning. Anyone know of an alternate option of similar quality karma fit and look? I am also thinking of fabricating my own if I can't find something...would be great to get dimensions or patterns from somebody. Thanks~
You could start with a Kwik-Top kit from Speedway which was originally designed and sold by Waddingtons here in Australia but stolen by Speedway. My son used one on his 32 roadster, added an extra bar around the back like on the Bop Top then covered it in 1mm alloy. He hasn't got it trimmed yet as he is thinking of altering it slightly. I think he has lots of pics of the job if you're interested. He has 2" chopped posts and his windshield is laid back as far as possible.
Give Mike a call. Mike Craig Emerald Coast Restaurant Repair (850) 336-0149 He bought out the old Superior Tops. Those were the poliushed stainless, and oak bows that folded down. Not sure if Superior's old web site is still up or not. I was into it several months ago compairing what Mike was telling me to the actual pictures. Mike has a buddy that is doing him a favor by setting up a new web site.
I like a number of custom tops I've seen. It often comes down to your own needs n cost. My need was both to look good up,and to fold-down,and still look good folded down<most when down look like a high pile of odd stuff { The Ford factory top, looked that way to me as well }. My design folds down low an faster then all I've seen. If you don't drive high speeds { stay under 60mph or less},folding tops/most will hold up> but over that=wind ripes them apart pretty fast. Folded down, keeps them safe at higher speeds. I'm a low $,do it my way guy. I did a Top Tech* for us HAMB rod nuts some time back! I'll add, that my top is still holding OK all these years later. I got to Sid just before the end and got his last 3 inch chopped black top with the removable back window. I may never use it but it'll be good property. The Rod Tops look like a good product? There is someone in the classifieds offering top irons and wood. I've done several tops using Superior irons with Oak Bows. I have cut up every set to get the look. I built my first 32 roadster in about 73 and made the top irons out of strap iron welded together and made my own oak header with a pair of laminated bows. Worked good and didn't cost much. Only draw back it didn't fold.
I was wondering if he is the one advertising the 32 tops in the classified here and on the Ford Barn?
Hate to see that Sid is ending his tops. My thoughts are that most others aren't quite as good, close but not quite. I had spoken to Dean at The Hot Rod Garage in Denton, Maryland about doing one for my Roadster, but he never got back to me. Guess it's never going to happen now.
I suspect Sid may have a few sets of top irons in reserve to use on customer cars he upholsters in the future? I may be blind but I can't find the ad for the top irons in the classifieds? I saw it a few days ago.
Different guy than the classifieds , but Miachael Santiago makes a redesigned folding 2" and 3" chopped set of irons. He has worked with his uncle to come up with a really bitchin look. you can easily find him on Instagram and Facebook. look up @santiagormichael and @fireballroadster
Uncle Buck: Thanks for the information above. I checked out both Instagram pages and what talent. You guys in the NW kinda keep a low profile not sharing your talents with the world. These guys make some neat shit. They do to top irons what I've been doing for years but know they're available with the right look built in. They may get busier?
I bought a black Rod Top for my Brookville about 15 years ago and had excellent service for many thousands of miles. Extras included a removable glass rear window and zip-in side windows.
Friend had a rod tops put on his 32 years ago , trailered the car to Michigan to have it done , really nicely done but quite time consuming to take down & store or reinstall . Was tight & quiet @ highway speed !
I'm inclined to make my own copy of a Bop-Top if I can't find something else. Will post on my build thread if I do. I'm not 100% in love with the look of the Rod Top and the assembly does look quite kludgy compared to the Bop Top.
It takes a bit of effort to get it just right The one in this photo looking pretty well thought out. There are a number of them but not all at great angles in my photos from the 2019 deuce days NW https://robertdavison.smugmug.com/Deuce-Days-Victoria-BC-2019
SDS: Go to Steadfast Mfg On Instagram and scroll down quite a ways and you will see Henry's first try at making the framework for his version of a Bop Top. You can see the results on his black roadster with the stretched door and passenger compartment.
I've had mine on and off many times over the years, and usually takes about 15 minutes, depending on whether I'm home in the shop or on the road.
That is true we are going to stop making the Bop Top. Also we have seven left as of today 9/5/2014....Sid
We found enough parts to build seven more tops, it will be 6-8 weeks before they are done....Thanks....Sid
We are officially out of tops. Thanks everyone for your support over the 25 years we have been producing the BOP TOP. It's been a good run....Sid
On behalf of all of us that have purchased and/or use your product (if I may be so bold), a huge THANK YOU. Your product is the bomb. Cheers, PS: my bop top is going to live on this little rig that’s in final ass.
