Later on, Mom convinced Dad that they needed a bigger family car and they bought their only new car, a ‘57 Buick Special wagon. It was beautiful. It had a strange “speed alarm” that you could set to the speed limit. Dad never liked it. It got poor mileage and overheated, once splitting open the upper radiator tank while we were on vacation. Lots of fun with three little kids….
That’s me on the roof on the left. Little sis isn’t happy. We must have been visiting someone, not our neighborhood. Cool old trailer. No idea where those beehive structures were.

That, to me, is successful customizing. He made a somewhat bulbous car look sleek and attractive.
What model Olds is that? I want one….

man, look at how young everyone is in this picture. Pictures from events today show nothing but people with gray hair, Kinda reinforces the idea that this is a 1 generation hobby... wbdswap.jpg

  6. Yes, back then the gray hairs were into brass-era or stock pre-48 cars.

  8. kinda, but there is a still a group of us younger guys into the old stuff and there is still a good chunk of younger people into cars. My grandpa and I were at a local cars and coffee event and he made the comment about how many young people were there. While they might not like 32 fords, it is still good to see a following for gas cars and hot rodding what they can afford regardless still keeping that flame alive.

  9. Sad thing is these kids today are buying what they can afford and what their friends have. It's tuners, easily available, cheap and easily modified on a kids budget. It's our job to try and swing them our way and to our hobby to keep it alive. Hopefully it is like the Motorcycle world where the kids are buying crotch rockets and calling baggers old dude bikes, when they age a little bit they end up on a Harley. One can only hope that they keep the automotive bug in them and transfer that into the old school cars of our hobby. We as the older generation, can't turn our noses up to them and refuse to converse with them. They are motorheads just like us they just need some guidance. I'm 53, and many of my friends are 20+ years older than me. They drive what I like to drive, and they have so much knowledge to soak up from. I soak it up like a sponge. They know all of the little tricks that they used to do back in the day, and call a lot of people glorified parts changers, because that is all they know how to do. They aren't bending and shaping metal, finding things to fit that aren't supposed to fit. We need to shape the younger generation and help them grow. A lot of old School Hot rodders and Kustom guys are dying off and taking that knowledge with them. Their cars are going away and so is our hobby.
just my nickels worth of opinion
