Not to mention a good reason for bead-lock rims.

NOT...a rare picture at all. It's ALL over the net where Fuel Altereds are shown.

BUT...it is, one of the best, and most often shown,.

    This is MY favorite .....
    WildWillieBorschAtRiverside.jpg
Willie going through the RIVERSIDE traps with the front wheels in the air and on full lock ..... rear tires almost pulling off the rims.
If that's NOT Fuel Altered perfection then what is.

Absolutely!!! Had a poster of this one long ago. Looking closer, Willie's running off the edge of the track and has no sign of letting off. Steve Reyes claimed Willie was over 200 here. Ultimate Bad-assery!

Looks like the slicks are a little concerned too ! Pulling themselves up tight.

Actually that normal for newer design slicks with low air pressure. As diameter changes ( larger ) gives more top speed.

No..."newer" (as you say) slicks bead, will NOT pull away from the rim as shown in Willys car above.

Why, all current cars use beadlock wheels/rims where the tire bead is secured to the rim of the wheel with an extra ring bolted to the rim of the wheel, with many cap screws.

The current design tires still do grow at speed, the tread still gets skinny and round also from the speed (or rpm), but the bead stays firmly secured in place.
They also do not normally use inner tubes.

In the old days before Beadlocks became available they ran "Inner Liners" which were inflated separately to the slick, they also served to hold the tire bead against the rim flanges to help avoid what was trying to happen in the above photo.

And before that they ran just tubes.

But I'm betting that Willys picture above is only tubes. The heavy liners didn't come along until later.

Thanks for that! Just spent the last couple of days going thru this 10 to 15 pages a night. Great cars, big brass ones to drive them...

    From above -

Interesting shot. On one hand, the rear tires are wrinkled well, the front tire is off the ground, The car appears to be in a mostly straight line with the track, and the wheelie bars are on the ground.
BUT...the injector butterflies are closed, or mostly closed ?

Or are the blades horizontal and we’re just seeing the throttle rod and the gray cast aluminum in the injector hat?

That's what I think - if you blow it up it appears the plates are below the shaft and the plate screws are on top...

Excellent question, but in the original version of the picture, the blades are wide open. Just a split-second photo catch.
