I do have seat belts & the kids haven't fallen out the door, I guess I was having a joke about a serious situation if it ever happened.

 

How often should you swap out gaskets on stromberg 81's? I bought mine from Uncle Max maybe 10 years ago. They have been on and off the car the last 5 years. They seem to run OK but I noticed the gaskets look wet with gas and I need to keep cleaning the carbs and intake. I don't see any leaks, just the general dampness and a seemingly adnormal odor of Gas. The screws are as tight as I dare.

 

Sorry for the ignorance but what is the aluminum under the body?

 

I'm not sure...probably for looks.

For any So Cal residents close by or can plan on attending the resurrected famous hill climb event, here is the latest:

A friend just sent me a note about the old Long Beach Model T club's annual hill climb on Hill Street. The steep hill has some great history and during our visits there, watched those guys try to go up that steep hill. Some did, while others did not. There was a great old thread here on the HAMB about the last one many years ago.

Here is the note:
The Signal Hill Model T race will take place on Saturday, Sept. 14 2024 at 10AM at Discovery Well Park, located at 2200 Temple Ave. in Signal Hill.

The hill is still there as always, but now has a modern look. But, for those old Model T cars, it still offers a challenge. The view heading down hill going east is pretty nice, but it is Long Beach/Signal Hill area.

So, how does a full power 348 Chevy Impala do on the same hill? well, it goes up very fast and at the top almost gets the famous "air" as it crests the hill. Sure we all like to say it gets lifted off of the slope like in the movies, but the car was too heavy, despite 300 hp at full power. Somehow, the teenagers inside sure had a heck of a time whooping it up all the way to the top... ha!

Wait, what about the flathead powered 1940 Ford Sedan Delivery? It was well known that the flathead was underpowered. But, in first gear, shifting to 2nd and then back to first, we made it to the top, just chugging up the hill. Slow, straining and steady made the grade. surprise!

Note:
The weather is cooling, today, but it will still be rather warm on Saturday. Unless, of course the ocean breezes come to the rescue...

The view from the top of Signal Hill looking east, today, would be a great view of the smoke funnels rising from the Orange County fires that have been causing all sorts of evacuations and road closures. YRMV

 

Was a good time last weekend in Northwoods Iowa for the flat hill climb. Bills model A,#33, with the Gemsa overhead conversion was king of the hill at over 70 mph and low 8 e.t Good to see @msnevilempire with the Heap and @5280A2 with his fast RPU as well.

Early A multi disk clutch…? Pretty sure I have 4 or 5 layin around. I never came across the special transmission input shaft tho

 

I just bought an early multi-plate clutch gearbox, we seem to have a few out here

Yessir! I've got a boat load of nice later A transmissions, but nothing early 28. I'm hoping to be able to find a few clutches, borrow a KR tool, and get in there to learn how to rebuild a clutchpack!

It seems out on the West Coast here they're about rare as hens teeth! Go figure

Thank you! Unfortunately it is just the housing, so I'll need just about a whole transmission! I've got some photos of what the Ambler branded cover looks like, so I'll be able to work towards casting one.

 

I’ll dig up what I have, doubt I’ll ever use it. Pretty sure I have a couple flywheels and a bucket full of clutches… just have to find it

 

Displaying my HAMB topper at the Hemmings Cruisin in Bennington last night. 80 miles round trip with no incidents.

 

Reason, here is a multi clutch from an early 30's sprint car. The flywheel has been cut down to 8 inches and a seamless steel tube has been shrunk over it to help keep it together. The multidisc transmission has a different input shaft.

 

Here is a few shots of the multi disc clutch setup in #40 to give an idea of why they were used in early sprint cars- Bolted to the back of the block with a motor plate in between. Pretty simple. This one has no name and a typical casting, it has been repaired and at some point..

Thank you for all this! Is there anything needed to be done to adapt the multidisc trans to that can? As my lathe only has a swing of 9", I'll have to have some friends machine my flywheel once I find one!

 

Here is the setup behind the vintage sprinter engine I have. It came attached to it.
AR trans with trick clutch linkage and pedal, cut down shifter, AR clutch with all steel discs and cutdown flywheel clutch can with timing marks.

 

Looks like my stash of early clutches and flywheels didn’t survive my dads move last year…

 

I swear, this is probably one of the top 5 engines in my book. Everything about it is just so damn cool! How did the leg feel with all steel discs?

Took the kiddos to the Early Ford show hosted by the Santa Maria Model A club, their favorite car was the Fronty speedster... go figure

Yes, as the bellhousing has a homemade aluminum plate cover over the starter hole.

That is so cool, thank you for the photos!! Is there any chance you could PM me a straight on photo of that Ambler cover? I scanned the Ambler can with the help of my son, and I'm going to start working on a new inspection cover to cast!

I’ve looked for years for an Ambler or equivalent to no avail. Either gold plated or sold instantly.
Guess I will be content with my OE setup as it was in use at one time.
If you decide to move yours along, let me know.

 

Pulled the axle out of my pickup to take some leaves off and reverse the main leaf eyes. I've seen some janky axles but dang...
