    World’s fastest 1962 Corvair

    Hello,

When I saw my wife (unknown college student at the time) driving a silver blue 1962 Corvair in the college parking lot, that certainly was a sight for sore eyes, as the saying goes. As we got together later in our college days, the aspect of a “slow” Corvair was always the laughing center of conversation. The one thing her Corvair had going for it was the “shiniest rear bumper in the world…” designation. The usual Corvair oil spray did a nice cover up on the rear bumper and when I cleaned it, it was very shiny.
upload_2024-9-13_4-24-11.png that rear end was very distinct.

But, it was her first teenage car and it did what it was supposed to do, start up, run fine, and get to/from school and work. As we chuckled, as fast as she wanted to go, it was “Slow… and slower.” But after we got married, the topic of conversation was always reliable but still slow. so, I created different scenarios.

One, get a turbo charger like the newer models. Second, get some speed suspension parts and better tires. Both of those options for 20 something broke married folks was not going to get it. so, we continued to laugh and then, she started taking the El Camino to do her errands and shopping.

During the conversations that led to chuckles over the years, here we are reminiscing about her “slow and slower Corvair.” So, she asked, what would you do to make it really fast? That opened up a lot of doors: Her daily driver, today is far superior to most cars on the street and that is the way she likes it. A/C and power… the two necessary things she lacked as a 20 something college student… ha!
    upload_2024-9-13_4-25-58.png
The nice thing about her lift up rear hood was direct access to the motor. In this fast race car version, that was the only area I kept, a narrowed opening trunk lid for access to the parachute to slow down after a blazing speed run at the drags. The custom rear Corvair unit was recognizable as a real Corvair… so, the title of the “Fastest Corvair” has been reached… with definitely… “more power!” YRMV

    Note:

What about the A/C? Well, if one sat in the driver’s seat, you would have more than enough A/C… Sure, at the time, a 20 something girl driving this new blue design would have been something. But, today, she would not touch it with "a 10 foot pole..." YRMV

a few years back, a fella named Jimmy Flintstone requested a special commission. He loved ‘49 Mercs and relates to this Simpsons character, Lard Boy. Adding the Mercury man’s flying pit helmet made this a logo of sorts…

  9. @doug3968 How are we supposed to compete with that? Incredible '55 Buick. My dad had one before I was born.

Please keep encouraging and training up our replacements!

  12. I tried coming up with a hood pin plate design this week that would lend itself to the 40's styling and have a different look to it depending on the reverasble orientation I could switch back and forth with.
After several designs that didn't work out im really close on this one, I'm still stewing over it before making the matching stainless plate for the other side, that's it for my artistic attempt this week.
