I was replacing the boots on my Mustang II rack and pinion and some (not much) oil dripped out on the floor. There didn't seem to be much lubricant inside at all. How does one go about lubricating the thing? Does it require grease or gear oil or what. And... how do you get it in? Do you have to dis-***emble the whole thing? I've never touch this thing in the twenty years I've been driving it, and it seems to work just fine with no maintenance. Suggestions? 33 Chevy 2 door sedan, manual rack. thx. .bjb
Manual steering gears usually use a thin grease, such as Grade 00. Something like CV joint grease, or corn head grease. Tractor Supply sells 00 grease. I don't know how to get it in, aside from dis***embling, or put it in the ends and work it back and forth a long time?
Thanks @squirrel. That might work. I wouldn't even have to remove the whole ***embly to do that. It has obviously been working a long time with no lubricant added. One boot had a 2 inch split in it for who knows how many years. And "work it back and forth a long time" sounds kind of soothing...
You might consider using a needle tip adapter on a grease gun ! If you can load the 00 grease into the gun ,,,should be easy really . Tommy
