My roadster has a banjo steering wheel of unknown origin. I adapted a ‘37 Ford horn button in the center. It’s 16” in diameter. I like this size in a roadster. IMG_5463.jpeg

There must be a moment of panic when the cuffs of your shirt get caught on a steering wheel with corners.

    Here are my 3 favorites:

    My black Superior.
    20201204_142446.jpg PSX_20201008_195204.jpg

Still on the hunt for the black with gold flake.

My "Milner" with Ansen cap. (2nd pic is mine.) I searched a long while for Ansen cap and was recently rewarded for my patience. Wheel needs a little tlc on the chrome. It will clean up.

My favorite but I don't know if it will ever be used in the car. The green Superior with glitter along with a knob that matches pretty well.

And a bonus Aquabird boat wheel:

I had a friend who had a MGA with a banjo wheel. Went around a corner fast and the wheel whipped back, got his finger caught in-between the spokes and nearly tore it off.

Looking back to page 1, Moriarty, you need to fab up a custom red wheel with a white stripe like the panel striping on the rest of your Vette!
Or, white with red stripes like your shifter etc.

Correct on the 61 Pontiac. The translucent part of my wheel disintegrated when I touched it. Hoping to try to mold it myself sometime 20240727_144729.jpg 20240727_144729.jpg

  11. When I was a kid about 1956-57 my dad bought a 55 Ford Ranch Wagon, the stripped down basic model with no chrome trim and no options other than radio/heater and V8. It had one of those steering wheels on it and for years I wondered why it was different from all the other 55 Fords. For some reason, the car came with a Thunderbird steering wheel on it. I suppose the original owner put it on there but I don't know why they would do that to a plain Jane stocker that was only a year or two old. Peculiar

    Hello,

I have lived with this particular view from 1960 to 1965 when I sold it to be able to pay for college. It was the most reliable, underpowered Flathead motor ever. It started up instantly and drove everywhere along the So Cal coastline from Santa Barbara to Baja, Mexico, countless times. In those early days, no one wanted to get stuck in Baja. So, it was with trepidation to take an old Flathead powered anything, let along an old 40 Ford Sedan Delivery with 2-3 surfboards and beach camping stuff.
    upload_2024-10-11_2-42-51.jpeg
I had to park the Flathead sedan delivery outside in the backyard. Our two car garage had our dad’s big Buick sedans, my brother’s 58 Impala and so I was relegated to park on the grass area, outside. Luckily, the “Salmon Pink” color was not the shiniest paint in the world, although it had plenty of wax coatings on it. When the black Impala got a coat of Carnuba Wax, so did the sedan delivery.

But, starting and backing out of the narrow driveway was always a challenge. Even in the dark, early mornings, leaving for a far distant surf trip location. The trusty steering wheel was comfortable and knowing it was a reliable hot rod/surf van, made owning my first hot rod wonderful.

I had hopes to put on a 3 or 4 spoke chrome and black ring steering wheel like the drag race cars we always saw at Lion’s Dragstrip. But every dollar I earned or saved went for gas and a quart of oil or such necessities. So, the reliable two spoke brownish steering wheel greeted me daily for 5 years. It just seemed like a natural thing to do, get in, start the motor, shift to reverse and slowly back out of the narrow back yard. It was always a tight squeeze between the two stucco corners of our house and the neighbor’s block wall to back up out to the street.

But, if my brother could back out his Impala between those two narrow corners, then the sedan delivery had no other choice and made the daily/nightly transition easily…
upload_2024-10-11_2-40-19.png Very narrow opening between our house and the concrete brick wall along the neighbor's house.

Luckily, the motor ran very quietly, as it idled and moved back between the houses to the street.

  19. What wheel/car is this? I have a similar wheel but not sure of its make/application?

    Hey @cactus1
As you can see on the dash, the Buick logo, that should give you a clue.
Here are a couple of pictures of the same vehicle, which is a vintage Buick truck.
Now if this truly is a Buick "truck" I will leave that up to the experts, it may very well be a Buick car that was made into a truck!
    Everyone's results may vary greatly!
I hope these photos are helpful to you!
    Thanks from Dennis.

My '37 Austin gasser's steering wheel. I wrapped it with clothesline rope to make a larger diameter grip.

    My '39 Chev gasser wheel, I think it's a '53 Chevy?

@AndersF that would be a 1962 Olds starfire only steering wheel.

Ask me how I know :D

I need to find the center cap retainer spring for mine...

In the last iteration of my 38 Chevy I first got a nice early 50's Pontiac wheel, it was a mess, I "restored it" and was happy with the appearance and then my cousin (who had given me the wheel....it was laying outside in the dirt when I picked it up) said he really needed it because it for a Hydramatic car and that was the column he was going to use in his 36 Olds. Well, I found the current wheel laying outside in nasty condition, with no center cap and the horn actuators were some sort of plastic that had gone south. I repaired the wheel, used wood for the horn and the next time I visited my cousin I found the cap laying on the ground:) I guess it all came out ok but I really liked that other wheel.
