We only have one shop around locally. Mostly caters to round track. Not much cool older stuff A local round track guys has been racing and trading parts for 40-50 years. Constantly searching thru other closed shops and helps liquidate (keeps the stuff he likes and trades off the rest) crap from other racers.
I’m not really into go fast parts but he has lots of older carbs and just about any pulley and bracket combo for older SBCs. Occasionally ends up with oddball stuff like the cruiser skirts I got from him
Luckily, the headers are blocking the poster next to her. Don’t think we’re supposed to post that kinda stuff
Man, I must be getting old or have just been married too long, that when presented with a stack of manifolds or centerfolds, I'm staring at the manifolds...
That is a treasure trove. It looks like the real speed shops of yesteryear. That was the type of real speed shop that I remember, not today's chrome polish and accessory crap.
That was Lewis Shells. When I finally got around to wanting something from Shells, he was out of business.
We have something similar here in town called Second Hand Power and it’s got pretty much anything you need or didn’t know that you needed.
What I remember of speed shops from my youth (70s) was that they never had what you needed and had to order it. Now they would have a carb kit or header gaskets and spark plug wires but cams, intakes, headers, mufflers etc were always a week away and sometimes more.
This guy has always seemed very reasonable The old rust stuff is super cheap sometimes He had a “348” block crank and heads. Told me something like 2-300 bucks. I wasn’t interested so told a friend that has 348s. Turned out to be standard bore 409. He sold me 3 nice OE 57 Chevy AC vents for $5 each. Gave him $100 for a set of cruiser skirts. had a nice Saginaw 4 speed with hurst shifter. Should of bought it at $400. He had NOS complete linckage and brackets Hurst shifters for $250. He had some NOS OT muscle car sheet metal. Cheap. Told him he’s selling it too cheap. He said he making $. If the other guy gets a good deal he’s coming back
Seb, Don's speed shop was around since 1958 IIRC. He always wanted, and got, top dollar for his merchandise. He had quite a bit of inventory on hand. Things changed after the fire that he had. He lost quite a bit of nostalgia stuff in the fire. Now that Don has passed, his youngest son, Paul runs the business doing mostly engine work. There is still some inventory available, but most anything can be delivered to the shop in 2-3 days from major wholesalers.
Frank's Speed Shop Fly Creek N.Y. just outside of Cooperstown owned by Frank Trinkaus. Was the local speed shop in this area, towed his stockcar to Fonda with the speed shop truck. Lots of fast N.A.S.C.A.R. Sportsman and latter Modifieds where build there. Frank sold the speed shop business to Jack Johnson who moved it to Schenectady and changed the name to Jack's Pro-Speed. The Speed shop building is now a tire shop. Frank said it was the little guys who paid their bills, the big guys left him hanging. I've often times looked at some old T buckets and thought that if one had the patients, you could part out the car and make more money than selling a running car.
