rebuilding after the crash

Discussion in 'Off Topic Hot Rods & Customs' started by racer-x, Sep 19, 2015.

  1. The base on the mag was loose alowing it to rotate. A push pull cable was used. Stops at the advance and retard set the limits of movement. Crude but effective.

  2. Same, admittedly I have never been within smelling distance of nitro fumes yet I am hooked on this thread and read every update.

If you ever get to a National event,
Stand in pits during warm-up you will cry like a baby in your throat will burn!!
The Blip of throttle will make you jump off ground No matter how heavy you are ,
Then if you able to stand as they stage I do not think you will forget the Force!

If you look around on line there are scaled down Dragster / Funny that are 4 to 6 foot long , hobby cars & tractor you can play with on Nitro , it's a expensive hobby also.

  4. There is just nothing like it. It's worse than a drug addiction and alot more expensive.

  5. Leaving for nitro chaos Havannah Illinois. Two qualifying passes Friday under the lights. One more on Saturday. Eliminations Saturday night. The weather looks clear with temps in the mid 80s. I have 45 gallons of nitro mixed ready to go. I like to get to tracks early to set up. We can then relax a little friday. 20240919_085241.jpg

  6. We arrived with zero issues. About 6hr drive. Temp is 91. We are all set up. Let the chaos begin.
This is a cool track built in 1969. It's a eighth mile track. It's in the middle of nowhere. Driving here I thought many times we were lost. If it wasn't for a small sign along side of the road we would have missed it. The corn is high and you can't see a thing. 20240919_173525.jpg

Havana is an interesting little river town. Imagine running a full quarter mile on that track. Good luck and have fun!

  9. I wonder if this track was once quarter mile. It has a long shut down.
Anything faster than 4.5 will be good.

  10. 5.5 at 110 mph got a little sideways for q1 left in 1st gear 1.25 60 foot.
For q2 we hopped it up a little bit. It went 1.12 in the 60 foot. I left in second gear.
I felt something funny around 500 feet so I shut off. It turns out it was spinning the tires. We serviced the car. We are ready for q3.
So that settles that. It will be a second gear leave from now on. We also added two percent to the tank to help pull the tall gear. 20240920_201013.jpg

  11. Heading to E-2. This will be the first time in Chaos history that two door cars lined up.

I think it was always an eigth mile track. I know it was marked as an eighth in the late 70s when I raced a guy on it. It wasn’t open and we ran a full quarter as measured by odometer and agreed on. It was sketchy and probably a little illegal to run there. There was money and egos at stake and I was too young and stupid to walk away. We were passing through on a spontaneous and not well thought out trip to California and the money I won helped with expenses.

  14. I talked to a local today. Always a eighth mile track.

  15. Good things this weekend. Fastest ever 60 foot at 1.12 Friday night. On the eliminator 2 run we
made him earn it as we went 4.45 sliding around to his 4.25. Our reaction times we nearly identical. We were pulling into the water box when they said they wanted to change lanes. They had lane choice. This last second change was brought about by changing track conditions. The left lane was junk but we made him earn the win as it was our best pass all weekend. We didn't break anything and put a legit modern day funny car on the trailer. I'm home. We drove back last night to beat the rain. It's no fun tearing the awning down when it's wet.
Now to get ready for the next outing. I'm busy the next two weekends. If there's any good weather after that we will try to get that 200 mph pass in.

  18. Regarding the video posted by Calkins ... I gotta say, the other teams "BUG" looks way WAY better ;)

BUG is supposed to stand for Back Up Girl NOT Gorilla :eek:o_O:D

In all seriousness, glad you are having fun and staying safe :)

congrats on a great weekend. It is good to see things come together and work the way they were intended.

Nope. I’m a nobody that just did some stupid but fun things before I learned better. Hopefully by the time I get this car together I’ll have learned better.

  23. I got home at 2am Sunday morning. I was do pumped up I had a hard time sleeping. Out in the shop by 9am. Pan pulled so the bearings could be changed. As you can see in the pics one was getting picked on. That's usually do to that cylinder being lean. That cylinder was richened at the track. It's a good thing we did or it might not have lasted the weekend. Seeing the bearing confirms our tuning choice. See why proper servicing is so important.
Several leaves were tried. The second gear launch was by far the best. A first gear hit was way too violent and was slower. The choice was made to pull the trans and gut the forward case. A adaptor shadt was ordered from lenco today.
I could have left it as is. It would have worked fine. Doing it this way there is only one shift button not two. There is no chance of forgetting to have one shift button up and one down. It also removed alot of rotating weight. Fifteen pounds of rotationg weight is equal to one hundred pounds ds static. That's a tenth. It's worth doing.
Leaving a gutted case connected saves me the cost of a new longer driveshaft. A new rear mount would have to be made. The shifter would have to have a new mount fabricated. The empty magnesium case weighs less than a few pounds. The oil jugs were pumped full along with the nitro and alcohol jugs. There's alot more. See how glamorous being a owner can be. 20240922_172020.jpg 20240922_172025.jpg 20240923_174200.jpg

What does the car weigh, Brian? Gotta be the heaviest nitro car out there, yes?

A thousand pounds... damn, that's one hell of a head-start you give them.

The chassis builder for my FED explained it simply. Ten pounds doesn't sound like much, but imagine having to pick up that ten pounds, and throw it down the quarter mile. Imagine how hard you would have to work. Now imagine doing that in ten seconds or so. Made me realise better how much difference weight makes on the quarter mile.

I'd sure hate to have to throw a thousand pounds down there at nitro-car speed. Kudos to you for cleaning them up with that much weight disadvantage.

    Cheers,
    Harv

I ask Questions learning more on & what others are doing , characteristics.
I counted a few times I'm seeing 15 shells, No big deal , see damaged/wear one that One rod/cylinder.
    How much of a Fuel
    change /percentage increase?
Since Lean compared to other 7 ,
Was Ring land pinched / warped on that hole?
The pitting , is that also of foreign debris in oil?
Was Heads pulled , Rod & pistons?
Do Mains show good wear , can main be rolled in with crank in block?

I have seen in pass year or so they can actually measure the force on Rod , crank , piston , pins ,bearings ,ext.
    Swinging / Spinning mass
Off topic but I thought this was little Amazing, A few weeks ago I was helping to diagnose issue on a big Cat
Engine, straight 6 ,wants engine started ,
Part of the Diagnostics , you can Kill 5 Injectors all @ wants , & engine would still run @ Idle off 1 cylinder.

    Is your Lenco Cs1,2,4

@ around 300 ish out how stable was the car threw 660?

@ the event , was it Run what you brung? No weight limit .
If a Legal Fc I thought min weight 2,200
    Any ways a 4:45 in a brick @ 2,900 is & tire pretty good,
On a track like where you just ran .
    Never seen / walked track.

Here local ,most of N/Fc A run 40s,50s ,, there only been a few 20s here.
The ones that show up here ,
    I think /sound set soft , a show
The local track most I think fell the track iffy, optical illusion , @ private test , door slammer 3s & was set only 3sec pull in 1/8.

    This is a sketchy track 1/8 ,
    Morgantown ,
