A family story goes like this: My Grandmother on my mom`s side remarried after my Grandfather passed. Her new husband Bert said he taught Weissmuller how to swim. My moms side were German ancestry.
How cool is that! I looked it up and after moving to the US from Hungary at age 1 the family eventually settled in Chicago. At 9 he contracted Polio and his DR recommended he swim for his recovery. Had his first swim lesson at Fullerton Beach on Lake Michigan.
My Grandparents moved from Mansfield Ohio to Clearwater Florida, where my grandmother lived out her years. I figured there is where this took place. Bert was a very quiet man, probably in his 80`s when I was a kid in the 60`s. I have no clue where he lived before Fla. , maybe bs for all I know? Cool to think it`s true.
How many of us old guys remember driving on a warm/hot day before air conditioning was standard equipment sitting on this awful plastic cover that made you slip and slide and sweat like a dog?
I dated a girl that went to college in Bemidji, MN, I used to drive her up there and bring her home for the holidays, etc. That was the first time I saw 110V receptacles on poles in the parking lots at the grocery store, etc. Shut off your car and plug in your block heater. I had my first experience on a snow mobile up there too, went out on a sled with her cousin in -44* weather. That was the temp, without the wind chill
