Can I just put a plate on it? Is that legal?

you'll want to check NY state laws...but generally, when a state assigns a VIN to a car, they also put a sticker on it, and it's something you're not supposed to mess with. At all.

1.) Are you the executor of the estate?
2.) Has the required time passed where you can start liquidation of the assets?

If you have those points covered and you have the transferrable registration you have everything you need to sell the car.

Really? I bought a deuce chassis that had four matching numbers. Three on the left frame rail and one on the transmission. I'm sure that wasn't the only one.

 

The Chevy guys are used to the numbers on the engine. They don’t understand Fordese.

Legal? I dunno, I'm no lawyer, BUT I've successfully sold cars that went to NY, Pa, Va and Maine using these ID plates and a transferable NYS registration without problems on either end.

I've registered many pre 1974 cars and motorcycles in NYS. If you have a NYS transferable registration all you need to do to make a sales transaction is sign the back of the registration.

 

NYS doesn't care much about pre-'73 (non title) serial/registration numbers...50 years and 20+ hot rods and NOBODY (DMV or cops) has ever checked for a serial number. He already has a LEGAL DMV registration number issued, and the only reason for adding the ID plate is to give a "visual" of that number...especially if you sell out of state...some states require a "number tracing"

Most states rivet the assigned vin tag to the frame rail of what they are putting the vin on.

That might call for the car to have been registered recently for the state's computer to be up to date.
Right now the first thing I would do is confirm that it has an "assigned vin" with the state. No need to take the car but ask the right people with the dmv and confirm that the vin was assigned by the state. Then find out what form they put it on vehicles with. Tag riveted to frame or body, Decal applied to the door post or frame or a number stamped in the frame. Then ask where they normally put it. Most states have specific spots where they place the tag.

I'll have to admit that that car just flat spins my wheels but I sure don't have the kind of money it takes to make you an honest offer but would hazard a guess that there is another member who does who really likes what he/she sees and can afford to make a deal. Once you get the vin thing figured out I don't think you will have trouble selling it to someone who will really appreciate it.
