I go back and forth on that, I know I only like the delray, the rest look like guard rails off the hiway stuck on the sides...the impala has way too much stuff stuck on it... looks like my wife refrigerator door,... but its one of those cars that the more you keep the body stock ,the more money it'll bring

never ever ever believe your ly'n eye's... the only impala that was longer was the ones with the continental kit on the back... and all the models had the tail light section that was leaded in...

    Hello,

This black 1958 Impala didn’t happen to have a C&O Stick Hydro in it, did it? Or a solid trailer hitch on the rear bumper? The last time I saw our black 58 Impala was in the fall of 1965, as we drove away from a gas station in Seal Beach. The new owner was a friend and he was now starting his teenage hot rod/drag racing adventures in the all black, on black, on black Impala. I was off to college and also, new adventures.

Over the years, I have tried finding our old 58 Impala. The definite C&O connection is a giveaway, as was permanent, solid bar trailer hitch.

Photos, below, were taken by a school newspaper reporter in May 1962 near the auto shop driveway.

That rear solid bar trailer hitch has saved the rear lights, fenders, trunk and bumpers, from getting smashed several times at drive-in parking lots that had sloping rows. And, whoever was behind me did not know how to start and leave correctly in a stick shift car.

As the car in the rear started, the driver had his/her foot on the clutch/gas pedals. When they took off the emergency parking brake, just before they went backward, the car rolls forward with gravity from the slope. Making the worst crunch sound ever heard. Instant thoughts of a totally smashed in rear...whatever.

But, all was for naught, as the trailer hitch did its secondary job of protection and kept the rolling car away from any damage to the 58 Impala. The only thing damaged was the front bumper if the car was lowered or the license plate smashed or both, of the inexperienced driver in the car, trying to get out of the parking space. It was not the normal clamp on hitch. it was a solid bar welded to the frame and was the ultimate rear protection item on the Impala.

upload_2024-10-17_2-37-30.png This was the way we left it with my friend, after the final sale. All black on black on black. The rims were new steel Buick bolt pattern and a set of new tires. They replaced the now gone Skylark wire wheels... 59 years ago… YRMV
