Hello, When we lived in the far outskirts of the Westside of Long Beach, it was in a row of old homes. Our white picket fence surrounded the whole yard and our white painted house was the last grouping of houses located in the western portion. Our extended backyard was the grand canyon, the army battle fields and a desert fortress all rolled up into one. The neighborhood kids all had the whole blocks long grassy firel to themselves. The far edge of the tall grass field was the Terminal Island freeway heading to the harbor. We moved there in 1948 as it was our first house our dad could afford. We met the neighbors and there was this girl that lived down the street. She was a character. When we played army, she had a green jacket on that blended in quite well in the tall grass forts each of us (her brother) and my brother had made in the field. When we dressed up as cowboys, she had her outfit especially made by her mom. So, she was out there in the fields with all of the kids. Digging holes for forts and running around with Grass Bombs, just like it was the Western area of the Cowboy days... but, in her case, Cowgirl days... My first outfit and my trusty sidekick, Duke. My sidekick, Duke, would lay down in the tall grass fort. Ten on command, run to the other forts and pretend to be a destructive "force." Jnaki We used to see those old cowboy movies at the local theater on Saturdays and our box canyons had flying grass bombs flying through the air instead of bullets raining down from the tops of the cliffs, as in the movies. As much as we pulled out to throw towards the “enemy” the next time we were out in the large field, those grasses grew fast and it was hard to see where we played cowboys, since now, it was army forts and bunkers. (Hidden inside of the tall grass.) YRMV Note: At the last viewing while driving down the old street, our house is gone, as is the whole neighborhood. Now, standing in its place is the latest elementary school, which has our old address and the huge field is a school district maintenance yard. The Terminal Island Freeway from the exit street of Lion’s Dragstrip towards the harbor. The large grass field is on the left side of the acceleration period. It was several long blocks worth of empty fields, now converted to a school district maintenance yard.
