I personally feel the late 40' - early 50's were the best era for customs.

A very early custom from the 30's

 

I think this may be an appropriate place to add this. Taken from Hot rod yearbook 1974. My first hot rod magazine so I have read it once or twice.

I don't know who built this top on Charlie Hall's 51 Cosmo. Most likely done in Tucson. I****ume it's the original and if so dates back to the late 50s and still in service.

Looks like mid to late 50's to me.

 

In 1948, $319 what a deal, but you could buy a car back then for $100.
