I get the pleasure of spending 2 weeks in El Paso Texas. Anything to see, visit, or drink beer at? Will be there Monday and Tuesday next week, then flying back in for two weeks the following Monday the 30th. . . . . .
Go to roscoe's burger shop on the north east (not open mondays. Monday go to charcoaler on the westside (on mesa near sunlandpark) for there burgers. After roscoe's (you'll be on the northeast side of town ) go futher north east and you'll see a great deal of car shops and nice folks. Dyer Auto Salvage is a nice stop Leon is a cool cat with something new all the time. Juarez isn't that bad. Other than that we have a couple great steak houses Cattlemens, Stateline & the Edge of Texas (all three are a bit pricey) Not Much else to do here.
juares isnt that bad..........................if its during the day and you dont head down any non tourist looking streets. i was in juarez for about a week and a half around feburary/march right around when the prison riots were going on. and stayed in a building that was the nicest on the block and it was still even a poor substitute for a brick garage i saw more then a hand full of people i saw the day before laying dead on the side walk with holes in them the next morning. think im joking? look up femicide on google elpaso? hmmm driving over/threw the mountains on the west side of the city~might take you over the boarder into new mexico im not sure~ is a preety cool short trip, lots of good views. i think theres 2 or 3 hambers there now tha have joine din the last 6 or so months? tim
Oh and after a drunken night its el paso tradition to at least once stop by chicos tacos all you need is 7 bucks and you can eat it all!
Come on guys! I live in El Paso and work in Juarez. I go there every day, it's no big deal. Not much to see there other than "chicas pobres" in the Joker though. Driving out Montana Ave. and checking the junkyards is fun (wait, why am I telling you guys this?) Another cool thing to check out about 60 miles north of El Paso is White Sands, this is probably the best place on the planet to take pictures of your car, girl etc. because it is so weird looking. Old Mesilla is pretty cool too. Have fun and if you do go to Mexico, skip the bars on Juarez Ave., that's the only crappy part.
Carlsbad Caverns ain't too terribly far, either. If you're rarin' for a steak, there's a really cool place up in the hills the locals can tell you about. If you like football, UTEP ain't half bad these days.... hopefully their tickets are still cheap as hell.
If you like western boots go to Lucchese's factory store. (pronounced la-ka-sa). Bought my 1st pair there in 1998, got a million miles on them and they still look good and feel great. Ted
To the northeast (about 30 miles) is a pretty nice area called Hueco Tanks. Nice grill sites there and sunset skyline cant be beaten on that spot. I've been there often during my air force time. (Listen to the radio also, with a little luck you can see spaceshuttle on the back of a 747 at Biggs -I think thats what its called, dont remember right- Airfield) hueco tanks Steak and Ale on Magruder Road, if I rem right, was fun to dine at - well at least back when I was in TX 1989 That was taken when I saw the Shuttle in '89: And this is how ELP looked at nite:
hhmmm el paso huh? i live about 30 miles away from there. you HAVE to eat at chico's tacos!!! it's the best. good tacos smoothered in red sauce and government cheese!! what to see?....i have no idea, really not a whole lot to see. downtown is cool if you want the feeling of being in mexico without crossing the bridge. juarez isn't as cool as it used to be, but the mercado is worth a trip. hueco tanks is cool. white sands natl. monument is about an hour away. if you come to las cruces give me a call! _T
yes, I said there inst much to see, I have lived there during my high school years and mi familia are still there, but it doesnt have many tourist attractions. Juarez used to be kinda cool to check out but that was over 15 years since I have been there, and then it was us high schoolers going there to drink and drown. Some good skate spots but I doubt you skate right?
Take a trip to http://www.war-eagles-air-museum.com/automobiles.html Sunland Park.....they a cool exhibit. I grew up in the E.P. you'll be amazed at all the "old" cars driven around, talk about daily drivers, these are "yearly" drivers. Eat at Kiki's or Leo's for good Mexican..mother milk for sure!
Wow, I grew up in El Paso, and went to high school there... Austin High School. Haven't seen it for 30 years. I do remember Carlsbad Caverns was interesting (I even remember the smell). I also remember sitting on the mountain next to the stadium and watching UTEP play or lose. Also remember White Sands Missile Range (I think they changed the name), and getting badly sun burned there. I remember Ft. Bliss and listening to Taps at night. Many many memories there. Mom would never let me go to Juarez though. This is the El Paso I remember.
thanks for all the info. The only skateboarding I do is on a 4ft board and the dog does all the pulling on the leash. I more or less skate"ride".
Chicos Tacos and the Lamplighter(as well as Montana hideaway, the flame, and the naked harem) , man you guys are bringing back some fond memories of the army days up on the hill at logan heights.
We have the best strip joints anywhere- Red Parrot, Foxy, Tequila Sunrise and Jaguar's,or so I've heard. Of course you have to eat at the world famous Chico's Tacos, as well as Cattleman's Steak House at Indian Cliffs Ranch. There is Barnett Harley Davidson-the worlds largest Harley dealer. In Santa Teresa, about 20 minutes away, is the War Eagle's Air Museum which has dozens of old war birds, as well as some cool old cars. Juarez, Carlsbad Caverns, Hueco Tanks, White Sands National Monument and Ruidoso,Nm. are all cool day trips. The Rolling Stones will be in Sun Bowl Stadium Friday, and UTEP football is the best it has ever been. Lots to do if you want to.
Decided to get away from the same old, same old last year. No NFL, no NASCAR, no NBA. Took the whole family to the bullfights in Juarez! It was very interesting and a great scene especially if you like to people watch. Unfortunately, CD Juarez let Wal-Mart replace the beautiful old Bull Ring. Disturbing, disgusting and shameful that we can't even go to old Mexico for the non-pasteurized sporting events. I'm discouraged. Everything's getting so sanitary, homogenized, ummm,,, not sure what the right word is, but Juarez tears down one of the few really great landmarks in their historic city, all for shopping at Wal-Mart. Does no one get it anymore? One great place in El Paso, if you must stay in the US. Go here to EAT! Cappetto's Italian Restaurant 2716 Montana Ave El Paso, TX 79903 While there late on a Saturday night after the bull fights in Juarez, we end up in this great little family owned, been there a long time, Italian joint. We over hear the guys talking at the table next to us, talking familar talk from our own days on the road 23 years ago. It turns out to be the band Double Trouble. Stevie Ray's band as most of you know.. That was one fun weekend. One more thing, if you need dental work done at just about 8 times less than in the states, PM me and I'll tell you who to see. Last thing I had done there was a crown for 175 dollars. In Albuquerque it would have been over a thousand... The guy did better work too!
Thanks to those who posted, My trip was moved back to November 6th thru the 10th. Sounds like Chico's taco's is a must stop.
